Well I've maintained for years that Israelis are great at developing technology but we are terrible at using it (for non-military purposes).

Well, I'm in no position to argue yosithezet, but I can think of a lot of anecdotal things anyway that have been developed in Israel that have been nicely developed/used. Don't sell yourselves too short.

I've myself used or seen the fruits of many innovations like electronic phone recording in call centers, electronic taxi dispatching, internet firewalls, etc. That gastric camera capsule was developed in Israel right? The Centrino chip? (other Intel innovations?)

Anyway, I'm sure you can point to lots of other developments that haven't been exploited as well. I just think there's still a lot to be proud of.

The Intel Dothan(Pentium-M) and the new Yonah processors were also developed in Israel. The thing is that the Intel brand is so well established here so the AMD brand is almost non-existing. AMD have just announced opening an office here realizing there is a huge market and they are totally missing it.

The same goes with Microsoft against Linux and/or Mac. I believe more than 95% of the machines connected to the internet in Israel use Microsoft Internet Explorer so developing websites that support other browsers becomes an unnecessary investment and many websites in Israel simply do not support anything but IE.

E-Commerce in Israel is at a beginning stage but is picking up fast. Website usability and overall look improves accordingly.

A little OT at this point, but just something to mention -- the Intel chip fabrication plant in Kiryat Gat is one of the best, most efficient 'fabs' in the Intel system, and is therefore a model for the rest of the world. That may sound an excessively boring thing to note, but it's interesting because it relates to the quality of work done there versus similar plants around the world, and it translates to better financial success because it means that more, saleable, expensive wafers are produced there. (No, I don't know any more than the average 'geek' layman about chips, so I can't say much more; I just happened to get an excellent tour there once and asked a lot of questions. I never miss a chance to visit Kiryat Gat.)

that's probably part of the reason they are building another huge fab (the other being the large subsidy given by the gov't).

Back on topic, Israel used to be known for its "get it done, efficiently, and with as little resources as possible". LY's website probably costs 10x what it should and doesn't work.

Though the company working on the new site is not McCann Digital, its Euro Tel Aviv.
McCann Digital is part of EL Al's Advertising firm, McCAnn Erickson. McCann built the current site, they lost to Euro in the tender to build the new "million dollar site."

LY787, you seem to be pretty much in the know! Have you had an opportunity to see screenshots of the new site? Or any development sketches?

Cheers

If you call them and complain I'm sure they'll think you are nuts to try the thing in Kenya ....

Their world is limited to IE and IE only.
