In Japan, you can buy them at convenience stores (they are at least on sticks there), and they are called American Dogs. I do like 'em but don't see 'em too often...guess a Midwestern state fair is in order for next year.

It's that time of year.

Awesome Deep Fried Nutella – Cream cheese and Nutella are whipped and spread over flaky Phyllo dough sheets, rolled up, and deep fried. Served with a drizzle of honey and shaved almonds.

Deep Fried Cuban Roll – A filling of slow cooked pork shoulder, chopped ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and secret sauce is spread onto a slice of Swiss cheese, rolled up in pastry dough, and deep fried. Roll is served with a side of majo sauce for dipping.

Fernie’s Deep Fried King Ranch Casserole – This stick-to-your-ribs TEXAS SHAPED creation is melted cheese, salty, spicy, goodness that is dipped in a zesty southwestern egg wash and coated in panko bread crumbs. Deep fried golden brown and crunchy on the outside; steamy and creamy on the inside! Served with a side of red, white, and blue tortilla chips and your choice of our homemade “salsafied” sour cream or cheesy queso. Each one proudly flying the flag of the Lone Star State and deep fried in the Heart of Texas!

Fried Thanksgiving Dinner – Mama’s homemade stuffing and diced roasted turkey are rolled in a ball. Next it’s dipped in southern cream corn and rolled in seasoned corn meal - all fried to a crispy golden brown. Served with old fashion giblet brown gravy. The zesty orange cranberry sauce fills your dipping needs and results in a complete thanksgiving dinner, FRIED!

Golden Fried Millionaire Pie – Sweetened, fluffy cream cheese filling is loaded with golden pineapple and Texas pecans then wrapped in a flaky pie crust and fried to a golden brown. Topped with whipped cream, toasted coconut, and candied pecans.

Spinach Dip Bites – Creamy and delicious spinach artichoke dip bites are coated with crispy tortilla chips and flash-fried until golden brown. Bites are served with salsa for an additional kick.

Southern Style Chicken-Fried Meatloaf – Homemade meatloaf slices are coated in an authentic Texas chicken-fried breading and deep fried golden brown. Served with garlic mashed potatoes, Texas cream gravy, and a ketchup/brown sugar glaze for dipping.

Texas Fried Fireball – Pimento cheese, pickles, cayenne pepper, and bacon are rolled into a ball, dipped in buttermilk, covered with a jalapeno-infused batter and deep fried. Served with chipotle ranch for dipping.

Quoting myself from nearly a year ago...splendid.

Well, I still haven't been able to make it to a US fair, but I always end upon one somewhere in urban Japan. Yakisoba, takoyaki, kakigōri...all go great with unsweetened jugs of Japanese tea.

There is a show on Destination Discovery called Deep Fried Masters which is a cooking competition. Most of the contestants seem to be sampling their own (and competitors') product a little too often.

Going to the Big E (basically a joint state fair for all the states in New England) in Springfield in a few weeks. I am immensely looking forward to eating my weight in clams, lobster, maple products, and the Kraz-E burger (bacon cheeseburger on a grilled glazed donut).

Got to sample the product... for quality control.

Aunt Millie's Pierogi. The only reason I ever make the tip out there any more.

Having just moved back home, after a 13 year absence, I am eagerly awaiting the opening of the SC State Fair. I love the Pronto Pups. (the local corn dog)

Drum roll... here's the 2014 State Fair of Texas nominations for the Big Tex award!

Number 7 looks like genius to me. Deep fried beer got lots of attention several years ago, but instead of frying something that tastes like beer, now we have beer that tastes like something fried. I can't wait.

Chicken-fried loaded baked potato
"The creamy and moist insides of a baked potato, loaded with generous amounts of butter, bacon, and cheddar cheese, are coated and battered with a delectable blend of spices and flour that create a perfect combination of fried crispy crust and delicious, creamy loaded baked potato. Served with a ranch dipping sauce."

Deep-fried breakfast for dinner

"This is a 10″ flour tortilla stuffed with eight favorite breakfast items -- scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, bacon, potatoes, ham, onion, cheddar cheese and gooey cinnamon roll bits -- that are deep fried until golden brown and served with a creamy country gravy, salsa and a pico-queso dip."

Deep-fried Texas bluebonnet
"A blueberry muffin, scone-style batter that is stuffed with cream cheese, blueberries and sweet morsels of white chocolate. It is baked and deep fried to a perfect golden brown. This mountain of flavor is topped off with whipped cream, chopped white chocolate morsels, powdered sugar, blueberries, and a delicious blueberry glaze."

Fried Gulf shrimp boil
"Everything you would expect in a shrimp boil rolled into a ball, dusted with fish fry, and fried to a golden brown! Baby gulf shrimp, diced red potatoes, onion, lemon, and seasoning are formed around a cocktail shrimp, dusted and fried with the tail sticking out for a handle. Served with a remoulade sauce."

Fried Sriracha balls
"A lip-smacking combination of shredded chicken, corn, green chilies, tomatoes, and Sriracha hot sauce, formed into balls and coated with crispy tortilla chips. It is then flash-fried until golden brown. For those who like their food higher on the Scoville Scale, extra Sriracha Sauce is available."

Fried Sweet Texas

"Traveling across Texas to try the best and most popular desserts gave inspiration for this fried treat. Fried Sweet Texas starts with fresh pie dough filled with crunchy pecan pie, juicy peach cobbler and creamy buttermilk pie. It is then deep fried until the crust is golden brown and flaky, and then served up with a side of Texas' own Blue Bell Vanilla Ice Cream. A real tribute to Texans and their amazing sweet treats!"

Original State Fair Brew - Funnel Cake Ale
A light and delicious ale brewed to be reminiscent of one of the telltale flavors of the State Fair - FUNNEL CAKE! This refreshing English style summer ale has been brewed to be ready and crisp, with just the right amount of toastiness and sweetness, finishing with delicate notes of natural vanilla; all great flavors you find in a perfectly executed funnel cake. For those whose taste buds call for a sweeter finish, take advantage of the option to have the rim of your cup coated with powdered sugar. Must be 21 years of age."

Twisted Texas tacos
"What do you get when you combine the four major food groups of Texas? Chicken Fried, Barbecue, Tex-Mex, and Chili - Twisted Texas Tacos! This taco starts off with tender, juicy hickory smoked Texas beef brisket, double-dipped in a barbecue spiced buttermilk batter and deep fried until it is robust and beefy. It is served in a warm flour tortilla, generously layered with a Mexican cheese blend, crispy fried okra, and a sweet and crunchy tri-color slaw, accented with zesty poblano and sweet pepper corn. Served with a creamy country gravy, spicy Texas Chili and a miniature salute from the Lone Star flag."

I miss the Big E (Eastern States Exposition). Haven't been back since I moved from West Springfield in 1989. My kids would get the day off from school and we'd go as a family. I would gorge myself on fried dough - always with sauce rather than cinnamon-sugar.

Watch out for that big yellow slide. One of the kids' friends got a surprise episiotomy from a screw that was sticking up.

Aunt Millies Pierogi!

I never ventured into the midway there. I always heard so many horror stories from it. I know they still have the baked potatoes - does Vermont still have maple sugar candy? And what about Joey Chitwood?

I may be wrong, but wouldn't Joie need a walker by now? Wait, I googled. He's been dead since 1988.

I avoided the midway for the most part myself. I crossed it to get to the Lion's Club building for a hamburger since I usually had friends working there. Walking too close to the rides was a sure way to find puke raining down from above. What makes kids stuff themselves with carnival food only to lose it all on the tilt-a-whirl?

I thnk one of the things that makes the Big E unique is the number of permanent structures, incuding Storrowton Village, the big yellow slide and the 6 state house replicas.
