Some flavor elements are soluble in water, others in oil, others in alcohol. As a rule of thumb I try to always add a little oil and a little alcohol to any sauce, gravy, or soup, to make sure all the flavor potential is realized.

I'd be careful cooking with flavored vodkas... you never get what you expect.
(Though I guess the experimenting can be fun...

I love this thread.
I'm not much of a drinker, but if I do drink, it's usually Vodka. Or Champagne if I want bubbles.
I now know what I'm cooking this weekend!

I do wonder if "Shangri-La" either works for Diageo, Constellation Brands, Pernod Ricard or another liquor brand. After two plus years asking about brands/processes, and likes how Smirnoff is made and distilled in Kansas.
Earlier this year, I did get Boomerang at Trader Joes by the threes when it was there in 1.75L/$9.99 and I get anything charcoal filtered for guests and Monopolwa for family events as I think it is the best but I cannot get it in 1.75L in California and it ws also not available in Texas when I lived there.

Gorbatschow Vodka in US?
This seems to be a cheap brand in Germany, but on my last couple of trips there, I fell in love with this particular brand. Very clean, easy going, slightly sweet and very smooth. But other than in Germany and some European duty free stores, i've never seen it anywhere else.
Anyone have experience in seeing this brand stateside? or Canada? Last time I was in Chicago, went to a couple of Russian and Polish stores who knew the brand but didn't carry it.
Anywhere it can be ordered online for delivery to the US?

I asked for a Chopin Martini last weekend and the restaurant didn't carry it. They suggested Karlsson's to me instead. I hadn't had it before but I was pretty impressed (I'm a potato vodka drinker). Might have to seek it out more often.
