Depends on what you like. It's like asking what the best kind of BBQ is. There's white chowder, red chowder, chowder with milk, chowder with cream, chowder with broth, etc.

The Great Chowder Cook Off in Newport, RI on June 2

http://www.newportwaterfrontevents.c...wder-cook-off/

is a great place to go and try dozens of chowders of all types, some are excellent, some taste like they came from a can.

Thanks. I'm going to put that date on my calendar. I would be interested in that. I'm now making trips to Ri & Ct. as I have a son in Groton,

If you ever find yourself out West, there is the Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach CA. They'll even ship it to you.

YES!! I forgot the name of the place in Santa Barbara but I believe that is it. I also like the crab shack on the end of the pier for Clam Chowder as well. Yummy!

If you are near a Jason's Deli here in the states, try their corn chowder. Kind of spicy with an excellent flavour. One of my favourites.

Doogers Seafood in Seaside, Oregon, had a really yummy clam chowder

And now for something completely different -- don't laugh -- I had the soup and salad special at a Red Robin last week and the clam chowder was very good! Didn't taste canned, wasn't potato chowder with clams waved over it, had lots of clams, and was flavorful. Just completely unexpected.

I also LOVED Gilbert's chowder. I believe we ordered it in the bread bowl! So good.

I also really enjoy the clam chowder at Randazzo's in Brooklyn, NY. It is the last of the real seafood restaurants on the water in Sheepshead Bay.

I make a lobster bisque every Christmas eve. After almost two decades of tinkering, it's gotten REALLY good and I have never had anywhere near its equal anywhere. This and the clam sauce thread has me salivating.
