NPR:
Why Your 'Small-Batch' Whiskey Might Taste A Lot Like The Others

Steve Ury is an attorney by day and Recent Eats blogger by night who is tracking where the good stuff comes from. He tells All Things Considered's Audie Cornish that over 50 different brands from different companies appear to be bottling whiskey from this big Indiana factory, which goes by the name of MGP — Midwest Grain Products.

Ury says that one of the tell-tale signs on the bottle is the wording. "Does it say it is 'distilled' by that company, or does it say it's 'bottled by' or 'produced by' that company? That sounds like a small difference, but it has a big legal meaning."

He also looks for the recipe because the Indiana distillery uses 95 percent rye, which is very distinct. That's a red flag that it might be from Indiana.

Way to burst my bubble TWA - most of my favorite Rye's are frauds. I don't think I'll pay the premium for Whistle Pig anymore. IMO, Bulleit is still brilliant for the $$ though.

Nothing wrong with Maker's. It's the best Bourbon you can find everywhere. For the $$, I'd probably go with Elmer T. Lee - d*mn cheap & d*mn good.

Woodford Reserve is one of my favorites....I heard the Bourbon Trail tour is great

Was lucky enough to get a bottle of George t stagg - phenomenal.

For those that can find it, Van Winkle is the best bourbon money can afford you.

Stagg is one of my favs... stay away from the STagg Jr.. Not a chip off the old block...

If you like barrel strength offerrings and wheated bourbons then William Larue Weller is truly a treat...

If only it could be found more easily. Went to 20 stores before I found 1 bottle. Since I have no idea when/if I'll find another I drink it quite sparingly.

I have enjoyed both Woodford Double Oaked and Garrison Brothers lately. Poured a Michters American Unblended Whiskey this evening that is also enjoyable.

Bourbon fans should join us in LEX sometime for the Keeneland/Bourbon DO. Watch Community Buzz. We are gathering Oct. 3 and usually every 6 months thereafter.

Any tips for those of us in NYC? I hear it's as rare as hen's teeth.

If you want a bottle start calling and more preferably become a regular customer at a liquor store nearby. The shipments should be released sometime this month, they generally branch out to the coasts by mid November. I know my friend was able to grab a bottle at a Long Island liquor store during the release 2 years ago.

Now, if you'd simply like to try it there are a ton of options for you. Stop by one of the dozens of great cocktail bars in the city. Death & Company, Employees Only, PDT, Dead Rabbit, and Attaboy just to name a few. It's hard to say what you will pay at each location for a pour, though.

I'd be curious. I believe it's $40 or $45 at the one and only bourbon bar in my town. The local liquor store caved to competitive pressure and closed. Last year they had 2 bottles, held a bourbon tasting with about 50 brands and had a drawing for both. Sadly, my number was not called.

This stuff can bring astonishing prices. I know a liquor store manager who sold a 15-year for $800 cash. And the oldest can go over $2000.

I'm a giant fan of the free market, but this really pisses me off. Price gouging liquor stores need to be named and boycotted. This isn't a truly free market transaction - the consumer doesn't have equal opportunity to buy the product from the source, as sales are strictly controlled in most states.

I just returned from Austin and the going price was $60-$75 for an ounce of Pappy 23.

As I think I have written above, you can find Pappy in a few different London and Paris bars for about 10 pounds or so a glass.

I'm out of the business now, but I could never get my hands on much in my bar, unless I bought a lot of Sazerac Group's unsellable Rain Vodka. It was an up front 'quid pro quo'. Just a few years ago the 20 was around $100 (wholesale) & rarely available. The 23 was always around & I thought it was a rip at $190. it's good, but it's not that good. It's analogous to the 'Dutch Tulip Mania'. Has Chinese demand stoked this fire ?

Yeah, prices are all over the board. My local bar charges $13 for the 10 year and $18 for the 12 year, although they don't always have the 12. They're probably the outlier though, as they make a point of making sure that the price is something that allows the masses to enjoy it as opposed to a select few. I was in Florida earlier this year and the bar I was at was charging $65 for the 12 year.

I just took the Buffalo Trace tour a couple weeks ago. The guide told us that Pappy comes from barrels treated, aged, stored exactly like one of their othèr bourbons. Pappy is just selected from among them by certain tasters. So you can get pretty much the same experience for a lot less.

"Jack Daniels Honey"? Just buy Southern Comfort to mix with your 7 UP like college girls used to prefer in my youth. Also works with a bit of lemon to assuage a sore throat.

I was at a party in high school where a guy drank a bunch of Southern Comfort and threw up on the hood of a car. It made the paint bubble. No way I am drinking that stuff.

I'm pretty sure that's the puke, and not the booze.

Sounds like me. My first experience drinking was with Wild Turkey and Pepsi. It didn't stay down...I haven't been able to touch it since.

I've always considered anybody over high school age that drinks SoCo as a person not worth knowing.

I have a friend who got wildly drunk from consuming a bottle of cherry brandy in high school and threw up. 40 years later, whenever he smells cherries, cherry cough syrup, cherry beer, cough drops, anything, he gets nauseous. The human brain is an amazing thing.

After a weekend in France drinking 8% Trappist beer with Pastis chasers I know how he feels.
It's not a combination I'd recommend to anyone but when you're on a rugby outing choice doesn't always come in to what you're consuming.

PA released BTAC only via a twitter link. unreal.

Per dollar I am going to have to throw my weight behind Jefferson Presidential Select. It's basically Pappy, at 1/3 the price. Not made anymore, but I bought 2 bottles back in the day and have been hoarding it. For my money I don't know of anything better. If somehow you stumble across a bottle anywhere... DRINK IT

A quick google reveals that it can be had, albeit at a steep price. Someone in the UK could get a bottle for $177 that we might be paying $1,000+ for stateside. The problem seems to arise from the closure of the distillery where it was produced. I remember seeing it on shelves. Had I known, I'd have bought a couple bottles to hoard myself.

Ahhh someone who knows his mashbills. Sadly weller 12 is also fairly tough to get in some places. I haven't seen a bottle in MD in years. The weller 12/OWA 107 mixture is considered by many to be "poor mans pappy". I'm dying to try parkers wheated whiskey this year. That's been the one that I've most looked forward to this year. I'm a huge fan of most wheated products, with the barrel roof William larue weller being my absolute fav.

We had the master blender of Buffalo Trace in London a couple of weeks ago and I had a steak dinner and bourbon/ rye tasting with him. The company really does some pretty amazing drinks - from the Sazerac range through the surprisingly tasty Buffalo Trace through to some pretty obscure limited production drinks like Eagle Rare 17, Larue Weller and George T Staff.

What a great experience! At least in the usa, eagle rare 17 george t stagg and William larue weller are no longer obscure. Just 5 years ago the eagle rare 17 used to sit on the shelves and not get bought. Not this year. My liquor stores allotment never even reached the shelves. Their list for those bottles has greatly exceeded their allocation.

yup - same with pappy. I was lucky to find a bottle of Stagg in Timonium.

By find I mean getting added to the waiting list the day before they received their shipment. No bottles were put on the shelves.

Fairgrounds? They usually have excellent barrel picks. I didn't realize you were local.

Buffalo trace antiques and pappy almost never hit the shelves anymore it seems..,,

thelark Oct 30, 2014 8:46 am

Yeah, at Fairgrounds. I don't think any stores in the area are putting BTAC or Pappy on their shelves. I had Amex concierge call around and put me on a bunch of waiting lists, but no luck yet (Pappy is rolling out in MD). Keeping a close eye on PA after they released BTAC via a twitter link.
