Yes, the 400 calorie count doesn't give much options...

But certainly NO:

Fat
Sugar
Grease

and LESS:

Meat
Carbs
Fruits

unfortunately MORE:

Veggies
Poultry
Fish
Protein bars

Blech.. This diet thing is sucky, but then again it makes you lose weight..

Funny.. diets encourage to get more kilojoules..

which means energy..

which means calories:confused:..

But in the end.. pound in more calories with less weight.. That is why the KFC diet works.:cool:

All this talk of diets is depressing me, so back to the OP ...

A couple of rules stolen from Calvin Trillin (paraphrased):

1) If you walk into a BBQ joint and it has plates and silverware, or worse yet, waiters/waitresses, turn around and walk back out.

2) If you're in an unfamiliar city, never consider eating ethnic food unless the particular ethnicity has sufficient population to elect a city councilman.

I've found both of these to be rather reliable. While there are certainly exceptions to #2, it's really a cr@pshoot eating Italian in Tallahassee or Thai in Memphis. There are no exceptions to #1!

Directions to said BBQ joint should include, "Turn off of the main road."

1. If anyone dares to serve me that abomination called miracle whip(eh), when I ask for Mayo, I will return the food. They are complete opposites. Miracle whip is some nasty chemical sweet gummy concoction. Mayonnaise is a wonderful light, eggy, creamy, salty, fatty, spread that is the perfect condiment for sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, french fries, or many other things. And anyone that uses "lite" mayo is defeating the purpose. Mayo is eggs, oil, salt, and an acid like vinegar or lemon juice. Any chemical's they add or processing they do to make it "lite" is just going to kill you faster than whatever it was you mistakenly thought needed removing to make it that way.

2. BBQ restaurants that don't know what "fatty brisket" is. I can't stand the lean side of the brisket, there's no reason to serve it in my opinion. But the perfectly marbled and juicy deckle or point portion is the only BBQ beef for me. Everything else can be used for the far inferior chopped beef.

3. Restaurants that don't properly salt their food. Salt is the most important culinary ingredient in history, so important it has been used for money. Don't misuse it. I know people like varying degrees of saltiness, but it should never be left unsalted for you to top at the table, that's not the same. You only get too much sodium in your diet if you eat processed foods, not from salting while cooking, your food would be inedible if you tried to get too much sodium.

1. Turkey bacon MUST be prepared in the microwave.
2. Any frozen dinner that cannot be prepared in the conventional oven is worthless.
3. Syrup does not belong on pancakes; blackberry jam does.

worthless.

Turkey bacon is just wrong...kind of like "light" mayonnaise. I know it's the healthier way to go - sort of (ever checked out the sodium content of ground turkey, turkey bacon etc?). It's just not the same as REAL stuff.

Oscar Mayer Lower Sodium Turkey Bacon: 5% of my daily value of sodium per slice. My favorite! :)

Ain't that the truth. I think I'm still feeling sick from eating "Chinese Food" in Mt. Vernon, Iowa seven years ago.

Also, here's another. When I say "I want it as spicy as possible" I mean it. Not sort of spicy. Not "oh I'll take a sip of water" spicy. I want my nose to run and my chest to feel like it's on fire for at least an hour afterward. The skin peeling off my lips is possible. I ordered some Thai noodles today and they told me it was a "10" on the spicy scale. I'd say 6.5 tops. :td:

I never noticed that in the store, though I wasn't really looking either. but hey, it's worth a try. Does it taste close enough to "real" bacon that it could fool my husband?

Next time you're in PDX, let me know.. There's a place here that'll literally burn your mouth, skin, and stomach at the same time!

And they told me it's their mild.. :D

Well, it does to me. But I tend to make all my recipes with lower sodium products because that's what I prefer. Maybe that's why no one likes my cooking. ;)

BTW, you may not have noticed it because the reduced sodium turkey bacon is a new product from Oscar Mayer.

deubster Jul 1, 2011 3:51 pm

From Wikipedia,

Bacon is a cured meat prepared from a pig ...

Meat from other animals, such as beef, lamb, chicken, goat, or turkey, may also be cut, cured, or otherwise prepared to resemble bacon, and may even be referred to as "bacon".[2] Such use is common in areas with significant Jewish and Muslim populations.[3] The USDA defines bacon as "the cured belly of a swine carcass"
There is no such thing as "turkey bacon", let alone "reduced sodium turkey bacon." :(

I see this marketed in stores all the time..

Are you sure they don't exist?

violist Jul 2, 2011 12:18 am

They don't exist because they're a contradiction in terms.

I will eat just about any food put in front of me, except for a banana. Cant stand the smell, the taste, or the texture. If someone is eating a banana near me, I have to actually get up as the smell makes me nauseous. Having said that, I love banana flavored Runts.

It's not bad, but it is not going to fool a single soul on earth unless they are without at least three of the five senses. @:-)

Just a couple of random rules:

- don't overeat
- eat less often, but more (contrary to what diet gurus say about eating little, but more often)
- skip breakfast entirely, have a big, big lunch, and then a very light dinner like sushi, fruits, and wine
- cut down on fat as much as possible
- try to drink more wine than beer
- no junk food like burgers and pizzas unless I make them myself, out of quality ingredients, and even then I only eat stuff like rarely - haven't had any in the last 12 months in fact
- no added sugar in juices

Well, the key is not to think of it as bacon but just another smokey lunch meat that happens to come in strips. :D
