Popping in to say clearly I've found my people. Yes, your rules may be wrong (!) but at least you have them ;)

I have a few I guess:

-Mayo is fine on sandwiches with poultry but should never touch lunch meats made of beef or pork. Mayo on corned beef is grounds for imprisonment. Same goes for mayo on cheese.

-Soft drinks in glasses must be over ice.

-Raw tomatoes are the devil's food. Tomato sauce is fine.

-Flat water only. Water is not meant to be carbonated. Nature makes it from hydrogen and oxygen, there is no carbon.

I am pretty much in agreement with all of this.

CDTraveler Jun 29, 2011 7:56 pm

I don't eat slimy foods. This covers liver, lima beans, okra and snails. Snails should never be eaten by human beings, they are the garbage scavengers of the earth - what pesticide would you like on your plate?

Mayo: my brother would eat it out of the jar with a spoon, I don't touch it except on frites in the Benelux region. Theirs tastes better.

Tea and chocolate: the two most important crops grown on planet earth.

Cheese makes almost anything better, and if I can't add cheese, it probably needs cinnamon.

"Well done" is a term of praise, not a way to cook food.

Thats the technique.. when drying hands with a towel.. use towel to open the door and at that point dispose..

If no towels.. I exit bathroom and get some clean napkins.. reenter bathroom.

Never thought of that. I'll remember that one. I usually luck out and slip out when someone else is exiting. :)

Yeah, there is nothing worse than bacon with pancakes or French toast or waffles. Just awful. :D

I actually agree, although I know you are being sarcastic :)

I always ask for bacon or sausage on a separate plate, I don't want syrup touching them. And wht is the deal with French toast? I don't understand why people put syrup and cinnimon, or even whipped cream on it. You wouldn't put those things on bread and eggs, why would you put it on French toast?

Because it's so tasty! :)

I know this is going to shock you but they even have maple flavored bacon and sausage and HONEY cured ham! And people LIKE it! ;)

But, then, everything tastes better with bacon. Even syrup.

As mentioned 3 years ago when I last posted in this thread, I find almost no foods I would object to eating, unless the smell or appearance is particularly disgusting (e.g., durian, natto). I'm not sure how well I could get along with a lot of you persnickety people.

Mrs. Deubster, BTW, has a lot of foods she won't eat, but none because of the reasons espoused above. She's simply overly soft-hearted, and has a rule about not eating critters that might be categorized as "adorable" or "pettable". She does not impose this on me, thankfully, as I'm particularly fond of most pettable critters (bambi, thumper, and Mary's little lamb among them). She even has problems with veal, though she apparently finds adult bovines not cute enough to save.

t325 Jun 30, 2011 12:52 pm

Generally, if I can't pronounce it, I don't eat it.

My steak should be rare. If it was any more rare, it would still be mooing. That poor cow didn't give his life so you can cook it well done.

If a steak has to have sauce added on top of it to taste good, it's not a steak. It's flavorless, awful grilled animal guts.

If a beer can be bought in all 50 states and some foreign countries, I don't want it. Microbrews are the best.

I prefer my ravioli toasted and my pizza wafer thin and smothered in provel cheese. What can I say? I'm a St. Louisan!

I'm one of the few people who think the diet version of sodas tastes better than their non-diet counterparts. So no sugared up soda for me.

Bagels must be served toasted. Cold bagels are an abomination.

Interesting. I agree, if it is what I call a Wonder Bread bagel (that is, soft and mushy like a big roll) or frozen, you have to toast it to make it edible, but one of my favorite things in life is a properly made (i.e., boiled, then baked) fresh bagel. If you have ever had a still warm from the oven bagel made in New York (or, preferably, Montreal), there is nothing better and toasting it is unnecessary.

Yup, bacon, saugusage etc with pancakes, french toast or waffles is just plain wrong. Something I had never really come across before moving to North America. Very strange, incredibly wrong, and tripley so if syrup is involved!

Nope, ricotta and mascarpone are cheese, therefore savory, therefore no grey area ;) Cheesecake is wrong, unless it is actually a wedding cake made of stacked wheels of cheese :D

I don't know about that one. Pineapple on a pizza with ham is some pretty good stuff. Then, there are tacos al pastor and sweet & sour Asian dishes.

I can agree that it shouldn't be the overwhelming ingredient on any of these, but without it I'm not sure how one would go about making tacos al pastor or the sweet & sour Asian dishes.

Yeah, I should've said warm, not toasted. Fresh from the oven is even better.

Have y'all had the maple bacon doughnuts from Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, OR?

YUMMY! :D

braslvr Jun 30, 2011 2:46 pm

Number one rule:

The only sweet foods that are to be eaten are those which are meant to be "sweets". Desserts, fruits, ice cream, candy, etc.

No other food shall taste noticeably sweet. This especially means meat. Pineapple or any other fruit shall never be served near meat. Sweet and sour is out, as is most teriyaki. Pineapple on pizza is an abomination. Any marinades with more than a trace amount of sugar are out. Most Korean BBQ beef - out. Sweet BBQ sauce on BBQ or grilled meat - out. Orange or citrus glazed anything - out. Etc.

Exception: On the extremely rare occasions that I eat pancakes or french toast w/maple syrup, I don't mind at all if some gets on my bacon, sausage, or eggs as long as they are sufficiently savory/salted to begin with.

FMH1964 Jun 30, 2011 2:53 pm

Never, ever combine Gin, White Wine, Champagne, Beer and a raw hot dog. Trust me on this.

Sweet and sour tends to be pretty nasty.

Just like Lemon Chicken. Yucky.
Peceri nanas is good though http://myfoodilicious.blogspot.com/2...ple-curry.html

Sorry. Even I don't eat lemon chicken. :p And I've never heard of perceri nanas, but if that is Indian food made with curry I can't go near it. :(

Not all 'curry' comes from India....

Varieties of curry from the top of my head:

Japanese -(Katsu)
Thai
Malay (and Cape Malay - South Africa)
Indonesian
Indian (and neighbouring countries)
Caribbean curry

Here we are talking about a Malay/Indonesian curry. I am not sure really what you mean by 'made with curry' therefore.... Most curries do not contain curry leaves so curry just really means 'sauce made with spices', which doesn't tell you that much, for instance I make Jamaican curry with allspice and chilis (or hot sauce) at a minimum, but you can also make a curry for instance with black pepper and no chilis, and allspice is not used in Asian curry.... So yeah what is a 'curry'?

Tried to go on a long PDX layover last month, but the downtown location was closed. :(

Maple bacon sounds overwhelmingly pungent and sweet, though. I like my doughnuts a little lighter. I hear Top Pot in SEA has better actual donuts--maybe not quite as creative on the flavors/toppings, but better raw dough or whatever. I think I'd rather try them first.

All I know is that it was a Seattleite who sent me to Voodoo (see the +1000 above).

I dont think Top Pot is known for "light" donuts.

Raw hot dog aside, I think the drink combo would do me in. What did we learn in college...beer before liquor, never been sicker? Or was the beer consumed last? I this case, would it make a difference? Fun overall thread!!!

No, no, no. Bacon, sausage with french toast, waffles, pancakes is perfect if real maple syrup is involved. Yummm.

Recent desperation dinner of french toast, bacon, syrup and over easy eggs was scary because I dipped the runny eggs into the syrup! Yecch, how could I do that? I don't mix stuff on the plate.

It was magnificent. Excellent!! Am having to rethink my food rules. But I do like things separate, not mixed together unless I'm doing the mixing.

Yes, there is something about that particular combo that breaks the rules. Once every year or two anyway.
