OK, maybe it's slightly more "going out of your way" than some of the others, but: Marzipan Bakery in Jerusalem, on Rehov Agripas -- the absolutely most delicious chocolate rugulach I've ever tasted. You know, just a quick pop over to TLV, then bus over to Jerusalem, walk down past the street market, and it's on your left. You'll be back in no time.

The Mediterranean Bakery in Alexandria, VA. As you might expect from the name, you'll find the breads to be pita and lavash rather than standard US bakery fare. The best is when you get there right after they've taken it out of the oven. They also have various middle eastern pastries, both sweet and savory, as well as cheeses and olives and lots of international spices and sauces.

I can vouch for Alain Rolancy, definitely Michelin 3-bun (if they rated baking!). Meaning worth a special trip to visit. A lot of great suggestions on this thread; heartening to see that baking is so popular and appreciated; but this is one of the few that I would go out of my way for (by a country or continent).

Two "don't miss places"

If you are ever in Austin, take a short ride up the Interstate to Round Rock and sample the famous Round Rock Donuts . They were selected by the Travel Channel as one of the 10 best in the country. Texas Monthly magazine no longer does a search for the best donut in Texas, they got tired of giving the award to RR Donuts every year!

If in Oahu, be sure to visit Leonards's Bakery and sample the Malasadas (Portugese Donuts).

There are great similarities between these two shops. The donuts are made fresh, not sitting there on a tray for 7 hours. We bought some malasdas at Leonards, took them out to the car, and had steam rise from them when we tore off a bite. Neither offers much room for people to sit and dine in.

I've gone to RR Donuts on a Saturday morning and counted over 30 cars at the drive-in window, and more than 40 people standing online inside waiting to place their order. The nice thing is I can buy 3 dozen donuts, drive to the office, and they will still be warm!

Oh, and since you heard about these places on the internet, all of their foods are completely free of calories, carbs, and fats. Remember, you read it on the internet, so it MUST be true!!!!

Magnolias all the way. Love it. Was there last week.

NYC - Queens - Storks in Whitestone. Best danishes and cookies

Seattle - Grand Central Bakery on First Ave. S. Really good coffee cakes and cinnamon rolls. Alki Bakery also has amazing cinnamon rolls.

Capri, Italy - Sfizi. Maybe it's the setting and maybe it's just really good! Great croissants filled with jam.

...brings me memories of a small bakery shop I stumbled upon in Paris back in college days. I don't know the name or address but man it was sooooo good.

Sorry, doesn't add much to the thread but I just wanted to reminisce.
