It is mostly cafeteria quality food, however the setting is great and steaks are generally good. There isn't the kind of gourmet cooking that some other lodges have (e.g. Yosemite). And it is many miles to anything better (over 100).

There is a restaurant opposite the Holiday Inn Express, cant remember what its called, just wandered in one evening. Going by the wine list and menu, I think they take themselves pretty seriously, food fairly average but maybe thats because we were tired
Restaurant in Bright Angel lodge was pretty good
Nothing really outstanding but you dont go there for the food

There is a "gourmet" cafeteria (oxymoron, I know, but hey) in one of the main buildings (full of souvenir shops) near the head of the Angel Light Trail. Kind of expensive, but you don't have much choice at that point. There is a town with a McDonald's and other fast food spots outside the park gates, about a 20 minute drive.

While maybe not approaching the fare at the Ahwahnee in Yosemite, the restaurant at El Tovar is quite good, especially compared to the cafeteria fare that predominates in Grand Canyon Village. Dinner can be pretty pricey, but lunch is more reasonable. Breakfast is also available. Service tends to be a lot friendlier in the shoulder and off-season. Whenever you go, though, you can't beat the views.

Roast chicken is always a good bet. Where ever you are, you just need to order accordingly. Ie- try to avoid a shrimp cocktail at a truck stop in Nebraska.
Last time I was at the grand canyon, I do not remember the food. Thus, it must not have been really bad or really good, just adequate. It is has been almost 10 years.
