It's "fresh" in that the meat isn't spoiled.

Our WalMart usually has a decent selection of fresh subs that are made fresh at least a few times/week.

Apples and pears here.

A fresh made sub is prepared the same day, at best just before, or within a couple of hours before consumption.

A sub made with fresh ingredients, does not necessarily constitute beeing fresh the next day. A competitor to Subway reduces the prize to 50% advertising items as "fresh made yesterday"

A fresh made sub, using spoiled meat, is not only dangerous for the consumer, but also illegal

It's been a long time since I've been to Subway. I'm lucky to have a couple of good sandwich shops around and Jimmy John's and Firehouse are always good as well. The Publix deli also makes very good sandwiches.

Some places may make a sub with fresh ingredients, but that does not mean by the time one buys it, the ingredients are still fresh.

:) Yes, and I was pointing out that IME, they don't intentionally sell spoiled meat.

Eating a Jimmy Johns tuna sub with my left hand as I type with my right. It's okay, and I agree that Subway tuna is possibly the best thing on the menu, although I think that's true most places so I may have a pro-tuna bias.

I feel JJ's bread is much tastier than subways white Italian load.

Taoyuan Aug 27, 2016 12:48 pm

I am not the pickiest eater in general, and have found tuna and meatball to be ok subs there.

I agree and especially like the small jobs there, I don't recall what they're called, but strictly tuna on a skinny roll. Yeah, subway bread is too soft and airy. JJ's has a real crust.

If Potbelly and Subway are at all close to each other, I'll choose Potbelly every time.

Easy to say, but around here Subway locations outnumbers Potbelly about 10,000 to 1.

Ditto. The only Potbelly around here is someone's pet pig.

MrTemporal Aug 29, 2016 10:30 am

I see the pictures on the advertisement and thus am always disappointed at Subway.

The best sub sandwichs I get are at a small Italian Deli near my out-of-state relatives. On my way to the flight home, I stop by and get a sandwich from them - prosciutto, salami, sharp provolone, peppers, tomato, etc. Then I eat it on the plane under the watchful and jealous eyes of my fellow passengers. I swear I could buy a dozen of them , sell them on the plane, and pay for my return trip. :-)

Sadly. If you were in the "real" Peoria or the other side of the valley, it might be a different story. ;)

If I'm in a hurry and/or in unfamiliar surroundings, I'll take a Subway veggie over anything wrapped in plastic at the local supermarket or 7-11 or anything from McDonald's.

I will choose a Quizno's over a Subway (if I have that choice) because the bread is a bit better.

Better than 7-11 or McDonald's? That has to be the least ringing endorsement of anything I've ever seen.

I'll take a Big Mac any day over Subway.

When I get a sub from Subway, I usually have a tuna sub. Subway's tuna is delicious. I add lettuce, black olives, and mustard to my tuna sub.

Sounds like a good combo but I'd replace the mustard with mayo.

Same here. Mustard does not belong with tuna. Mayo belongs with tuna.

miamiflyer8 Sep 1, 2016 5:52 am

It's always weird how different countries value tuna at Subway, in Finland it's premium sub, in Sweden, Germany and UK it's a regular and in the US at least here in Miami/Orlando you can get a 6" for $4 as a promo item.

I've been given mustard on a tuna sub before, possibly at Firehouse, when I wasn't paying attention.

Mayo on a tuna salad sub is redundant. There's already plenty in the tuna salad.

I'd agree that yellow mustard doesn't belong with tuna, but I recently had one with honey mustard that was pretty tasty.

I've tried Subway, twice, in the UK. Utterly horrible. Tasted nothing even close to a US subway--Ugh.

Cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, black olives, onions, sweet peppers, oil, vinegar, oregano and pepper grace my tuna sub.

It isn't redundant. It adds a little extra touch.

Firehouse is the nastiest sub place ever. I got a free coupon for a medium sub in the mail and used it and the sub was literally the driest thing ever.

Same with me - I have never gone back.

Apologize to Your Kidneys' Day

I had an ok subway sandwich in Osaka. It was shrimp and avocado, IIRC.

I don't recall minding subway every now and then many years ago, before I noticed that awful smell ominpresent at US locations.

The only thing I smell is their bread baking. It doesn't seem awful to me. Unfortunately, the taste doesn't live up to the promise of the aroma.

I'll go to Subway in a pinch, because I know what to expect, but I've never liked their bread. It's like old-style super-soft tasteless white Wonderbread.

The veggies are always fresh, though.

pseudoswede Sep 2, 2016 12:34 pm

I can't find the clip, but Jim Gaffigan likens Subways to standing in a humid room filled with dirty, sweaty towels. :D

I'm fine with Subway but prefer Jersey Mike's.

This
Subway isn't my first choice but there is some serious Subway hatred on here. And I think their bread is ok--7 grain wheat. But I do love a Jersey Mike's.
Nothing comes close to a Godmother sandwich at
Www.baycitiesitaliandeli.Com
Fortunately or unfortunately they are in Santa Monica which is a schlep or I would be there daily. The bread is in a class by itself.

Jersey Mike's to me is a little overpriced and it takes so much longer because they're slicing the deli meat from scratch so that's why I rarely go there, but the sub sure is good.

Jersey Mike's is awful. I gave them two tries, but both times were bland sandwiches and horrible bread (even worse than Subway). They have limited toppings and try to sell on this "freshly cut meats" spiel which is joke. It's water logged meats sitting in a gross plastic wrap.

corky Sep 4, 2016 11:17 pm

Had a jersey mikes today just to confirm my feelings. It was hella good. I love the oil/vinegar/herb combo. I had a roast beef & turkey & bacon. The bread was really fresh as were the veggies. I'm a jersey mike's gal--not going to doubt myself anymore.
