I opt for Quiznos, even with the higher cost. Their new prime rib sub is awesome. |
Exactly!
And I don't like how Subway essentially ripped off Quiznos with their "toasted" ad scheme. That was lame. |

I was a Sandwich Artist in high school (best job I ever had, in fact; the owners would leave each night when my friends and I showed up for work, so we'd have the place to ourselves!). And, yes, they really are called Sandwich Artists. Anyway, to answer the post, I had many good subs at Subway--when I would make them. It was the one exception to the rule that a sandwich made by someone else tastes better. Once I stopped working there I couldn't even think of eating at Subway for years; my sandwiches had ruined it for me.
I completely agree that the average Subway employee either doesn't understand or doesn't care about making a decent sandwich, following explicit instructions, or using simple reasoning. But I've also found that this varies from franchise to franchise, rather than employee to employee. So find a good franchise and you'll probably get a decent sandwich nine out of ten times. I think this has more to do with the franchisee's ability to recognize/interest in hiring good employees (i.e. those with an understanding of customer service) than training. My friends and I may have blasted rock music, partook in illegal substances, and generally just misbehaved as employees on slow nights, but when a customer came in, we made him/her a good sandwich. And I agree that Quizno's is exponentially better. Oh, and don't eat the tuna. Or the seafood mix, if they still have that. Nasty stuff that. |
I no longer go to Subway
I pulled into one on a cross country drive (somewhere through Tennessee?). I knew something was up when the meat I was eating was warm. Not body temperature warm, but more like room temperature warm. Isn't it supposed to be cooled while it's on the line? Must've been sitting there for a while.
Dumb me, I ate it because I was: 1. hungry, and 2. tired of McDees. Needless to say, the 6" turkey sub made it's way out of my mouth into the toilet of the hotel I stayed in that night. Twice. At least I felt better after getting it out of my stomach. |
I wasn't sure whether to append here or on the tuna sandwich thread.
We've had a couple new sub chains open locally in the past year. Mrs BamaVol and I tried Fire House Subs back in the fall. We only ordered one sub and split it. We were both satisifed, but I don't recall what we ordered. Last night, BamaVol Jr #3 and I tried Lenny's. I had been given a couple 2 for 1 coupons and figured what the heck. Miss BamaVol, who works closeby, had said to expect something similar to Jersey Mikes, an outlet where she worked back in Charlotte. BV3 ordered the Italian and I ordered Tuna. I was pleased when the sandwich maker told BV3 that they did not recommend mustard or mayo on the Italian. However, the hot pepper relish overwhelmed the flaovr of the cold cuts. On the other hand, the hot pepper relish did not add enough flavor to the bland tuna. And this is my biggest complaint about tuna salad ordered out - mayonaise does not flavor tuna! - you must add relish, onions, salt, pepper, paprika, something for gawdsakes or it just tastes like canned tuna and mayonaise. So: Lenny's :td: :td: unless I figure out what and how to order there for a superior sub experience. |
Quiznos quality is much higher, but then so are their prices. Potbelly has high quality but has managed to keep the price reasonable. It is still less than $4 everywhere I've seen it. However, I presume they keep prices down by keeping it simple, one size and several choices, instead of two or three sizes and countless choices. Subway is mediocre - their "meat" is of questionable quality - it is worse than just about any choice in your grocer's deli case.
|
I've tried all the different breads at Subway, tried all the different meats and I don't like them either. I have found that Wendy's has a few different frescata sandwiches that taste pretty good. of course, they dropped the Italian one I liked the best.
My favorite sub sandwich is at a place in Woodhaven, Mi. called Pipers-just great! Or I make it myself, but the tomatoes have to be good-not the winter plastic tasting ones. |
Subway is pretty bad....but WAWA is worse ! You will not find a lower quality ham or turkey than the stuff that they use.

We're talking a gas station convenience store chain, right? Do they at least make the sandwiches to order? Or are you talking about some cellophane wrapped sandwich from the cooler? I've never been in one sionce I can pay at the pump for gas.
They also have a huge drink fountain (fizz city I think they call it) and usually have a large selection of slurpees. |
Subway is good; especially the Meatball subway with cheese, and not necessarily on the white bread. The cheese-steak is just as good.
Tried Quizno's for the first time awhile back in DC and I have to say they were great (WOW!). Better than Subway. Since there's no Quizno's here, I'll have to stick with Subway if I want a take-out sandwich. There's nothing wrong with Subway - just need to find the right combination. So many to choose from. |
I ate at Subway for the first time in about a year a few days ago. Frankly, I tfelt kinda gross an hour later. But, my cold cut combo sandwich with extra peppers sure was tasty. :)

That being said, Firehouse Subs is my new favorite place. They emphasize the quality of their meat and they pile it on an inch thick. Their subs are steamed, so they're still hot while the bread is still soft. However unless you live in Florida or Georgia you'll have a hard time finding one. A close second would be Jason's Deli. It is a favorite lunch spot of many people I know. Plus they have the awesome salad bar. ^ If I can't get to any of those, it's Quizno's or even Publix. |
Subway...bleh...
One of my friends swears by Subway. You'd think Subway is the only restaurant he goes to. He persuaded me to go with him one day. It was gross, their BLT has limp bacon and very little taste.
A few months later, he persuaded me to visit a different Subway and I ordered their pastrami sandwich. Totally tasteless! I've come to realize my friend likes Subway because he literally has bad taste. He took a bite of my Subway pastrami after I refused to finish it. He said, "Nothing wrong. Tastes like roast beef to me." I told him it was pastrami! For a good pastrami sandwich in LA or OC, there's The Hat! Now that's some tasty pastrami. Steve:) |

We ate at Jason's a couple weeks ago in Melbourne, FL. Out of Texas, I think. Very nice sandwiches, soups and salads. I'd prefer the food without the politics, though. |

You're better off sticking outside pumping gas !!! As previously mentioned, the meat is awful. |
Subway is just bad. Crap bread, frankenmeat, ugh. There is nothing good at Subway.
|
There's a Firehouse in the town just north of ours and it's okay. The problem I've had at FH is that I like cold sandwiches and they always look at me like I'm from Mars when I ask them not to heat it. Then half the time they forget and heat it anyway, then get pissed when I ask them to make me another sandwich.
|
Subway really shorts you on the amount of meat on the subs too. Plus, I've really hate it when someone makes your sub "upside down," with the meat on top, cheese, dressing, etcetera on the bottom.

I don't know what people are talking about. All my subs at subway are good.

I'm a big fan of Jason's Deli and they deliver!! :) ^ We ordered in for lunch a few times at the office when the weather was crappy. And a Firehouse Subs just opened here in NC, right across the street from Jason's Deli. I'll have to give them a try soon. |
Subway's chicken breast meat makes me gassy.
Gassy nymphs are never a good thing. I never eat there anymore. I will eat at Quizno's or Backyard Burger for a quick sandwich though! Hawaiian Chicken...mmmm.... |
Ugh. I hate it when Subway doesn't get your order right. 2/3 of my experiences with subway have been pretty bad.
|
Subway in london seems much much nicer then in the US, cant really figure out why
|
I go to Subway when I have a twofer coupon.
But, I remember with affection going to a Subway near Windsor Castle years ago after a couple of weeks in England. As we started eating, my friend and I both remarked: "Hey, this has some taste." Not like English food at all. :) |
I can tolerate Subway but the one sandwich I look forward to eating is their carne asada which I can get in Mailbu and and east Santa Barbara but has been cancelled in other Santa Barbara neigborhoods.
|
Yuck! Don't like Subway. I much prefer Quiznos! I also used to like Silver Mine Subs in Colorado. They would deliver, even quite late at night.

Quiznos sucks..... every time i have been there....i break a tooth on that so called toasted bun. bricks are softer..!!!! i gave up on them.. its subway or blimbeys now !!! |
Quiznos is best, Subway makes a very weak effort at toasting their subs.
|
Actually, their best sandwich ever was the limited-time Carnitas sandwich, with shredded pork, cilantro, and onions. I visited Subway quite a few times a month when they had it.
Since it's been gone, I've been to Subway exactly 0 times in the past 1 1/2 years. To me, Togo's > Quizno's > ??? > Subway. |
It's been years since I've passed over the threshold of a Subway. I still like a good sandwich and something on a sub roll keeps the stomach from growling until dinnertime.
I don't go often anymore but current chain sub shops I will eat from include Jimmy John's, Mama Goldbergs, and Jersey Mike's. Quizno's has gone downhill. Their subs appear smaller and less full. |

I like it about once a year, but have to say that shredded pork sandwich mentioned in the previous comment (9 years ago!) sounds pretty good. |
Disliked it when I could eat bread but as they don't have anything on the menu which I can actually eat, it's now firmly off the agenda

We like Subway because (most) stores are really good at addressing Miss Swede's food allergies. (Most) stores are more than happy to get a new knife or wash the existing one, change out their gloves, and use a salad container to prepare her sandwich in. Jersey Mike's uses the same slicer for their meats and cheeses, so that's an instant deal breaker there. I've heard that JJ's is good with food allergies. I might take her there one day soon. |
