Question Any suggestions for romantic dinner in Amsterdam?

My wife and I will be there on St Valentines day and I would like to take her somewhere romantic.

There was a very, very long thread here recently about eating in Amsterdam. I'm not sure how one finds things that have gone off the board but that would have some good suggestions for you. I found a rice table dinner in Amsterdam very romantic, but I'm sure there are lots of other restaurants that will fit the bill.

The other thread(s) had lots of good info, but nothing really romantic.

I took my better, cuter half to AMS for a rijstafel at Sampurna a few weeks ago for his birthday based on the recommendations of both Missy and ScottC. It was a very nice experience.

I think a romantic dinner has more to do with the dining partner than where the food is eaten. I've had romantic lunches at a diner. :-)

Good point. ^

Christophe's, while expensive, has excellent French food and the setting is nice. You could have a very special meal there for sure. And Christophe comes out and welcomes you and tells you about the evening's specials.

I am not sure about romantic, but two of the best meals I had in Amsterdam are at the restaurant at OKURA Hotel (I believe there's more than one, I dined at the more formal one) and at TEMPO DOELOE (Indonesian).

Both very different, both excellent, both very memorable.

Maybe romantic could be a good restaurant in the hotel you are staying in (more time together). In that case I would recommend the Die Port Van Cleve (http://www.dieportvancleve.com/index.htm) and their restaurant De Poort, where they serve numbered steaks counting from their first in 1873. (I'm personally a vegetarian but I stand by my suggestion). It's a decent 4* hotel adjacent to the Magna Plaza across from Dam Square. If you search hard enough they almost always have a special or two going on. Also try www.bookings.nl .

Christophe's is good. Also try Bordewijk or Chez Georges.

Some of the canal boats have a dinner cruise where you can eat while taking in the evening sights from the canals. I saw several while there in September and think they run about EURO 25 pp.

The last time that I was in AMS I had a fabulous meal in a restaurant that was named 't Swarte Schaep (The Black Sheep). It was located in the Leidseplein square area. I highly recommend it.

A lovely restaurant is De Silveren Spiegel (the Silver Mirror) on a quiet side street near the Centraal station. We were staying at the Renaissance and it was just across the street. Traditional food, romantic atmosphere, tasteful service and an excellent wine list. Expensive and worth it.

I looked into the Silver Mirror but they wanted 140 euros per person for dinner that night. I made reservations for the Rembrant room at the Five Flys instead. Anyone been there?

It is expensive, but the food is very, very good.

I've not been to the Five Flys but have heard it's a bit of a tourist spot.

I've heard the same from a Dutch friend of mine. I think she recommended Van Harte but we didn't get there last time.
