Ummmmm-no
there are very good buffets in LV-and these tend to be $20 or more for lunch/dinner.
Most however are less than wonderful.
And at some-if I had no other options-would see me shedding tonnage quickly

I enjoyed the breakfast buffet at Harrah's Hotel Casino in South Lake Tahoe two weeks ago at $10.99 (lunch was $11.99, and dinner $18.99).

Crazy Buffet. http://www.gocrazybuffet.com/
Yes, it sounds like a cheap chinese buffet dive. However, this is a bit more upscale. (and the prices reflect that).
There are several. I know of one each in Orlando, West Palm Beach and Tampa. There may be others....

The Nordic Lodge in Charlestown, RI. All you can eat lobster, shrimp, filet mignon, prime rib and lots and lots more. This place has been a RI institution for years. Last year's price was $70/person with soda, tax and tip included.

I am fan of the Paris Las Vegas for the breakfast buffet. Great selection of regional tastes (you gotta love scallops in the morning). After breakfast I am set until dinner.
I also like the Bellagio for the dinner buffet. I went with two friends and one kept asking, Is this woth a 35 minute wait? Is it worth the price? He brought his first plate to the table and said the answer was "Yes!" to both questions. Is it as good as many of the resturants in Vegas, no. But it is good for a night's dinner with some variety.

I hit the Wynn Casino Hotel for lunch last week when I was in Las Vegas. The one item that impressed me was jumbo peeled shrimp, which alone was worth the $22 cost, as I love shrimp, and you don't see the jumbo variety at your standard buffet. I also enjoyed the salmon and lamb. I thought the seating was a little crowded but the food made up for it. The dessert bar was rather mediocre with small squares of dessert instead of slices of cake/pie that you normally see at the other casinos. If you want great desserts, this is not the place to go.

Outrigger Reef Hotel, Waikiki Beach
The last two mornings I've made my traditional trek over to the Outrigger Reef Hotel on Waikiki Beach for their breakfast brunch ($11.50 after $1 off coupon un tourist magazines). It features scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage, bacon, ham/turkey at a carving table, and a variety of pastries (including coconut and banana nut pound cake, danish, chocolate macadamia nut muffins) and fresh fruit (including pineapple, papaya). They also have guava or pineapple juice. The dining room faces the beach and Diamond Head. They also have a bar with cold cereals (didn't try those). As things tend to be a little pricey in Waikiki (a Big Mac meal, for comparison, is $7.50), this is a pretty good value.

Another Sydney hotel buffet
Grace Hotel, Sydney (cnr Clarence & King St, near QVB/Town Hall)
A Christmas lunch through work, only $32/head (incl. a large glass of bubbly or wine)
Surprisingly tasty food! (Listing of buffet is linked there)
On the buffet:
Room for improvement?
Tea and coffee as part of the buffet. Eating so much made us all bloated and sleepy. Christmas (like Thanksgiving) indeed!
Atmosphere:
The atmosphere at the Grace is okay, nothing too downmarket (though no grand piano performance at this buffet
) and what one would expect of a midsize 3* business hotel in the CBD.
Verdict
Compliments to the chef, cooks and floor staff here - a well-run show. ^

On the buffet:
- 'Appetisers' Soup (leek and potato on this day IIRC) & bread selection (why fill up on carbs at a buffet?
) - Prawns aka shrimp (peeled), mini octopus salad, vietnamese paper spring rolls, oriental pork
- Small carvery with beef and lamb, beef casserole, fish tikka
- Buffet favourites such as a variety of potato salads & other salad/carb dishes
- Salads, fruits
- Large dessert selection with more than ten choices plus a couple of decent icecreams (inc. coffee!)

and great "holiday" buffets at the Universal City Hilton
A few months ago, I was invited to a party at the Universal City Hilton. It's off the 101 Freeway and Lankershim in Hollywood, CA.
We ate at the Asian themed buffet restaurant, Cafe Sierra. They have a wonderful seafood buffet there with all you can eat king crab legs, lobsters, shrimp, fish, as well as the standard buffet fare like prime rib, chicken, etc...
While it's Asian themed, a lot of the food is what you'd find in any seafood restaurant. They even have a chef available at the buffet to make lobster fettucine or whatever you'd like!
It's $40 per person (good thing I wasn't paying.)
I'd definately go back again!
Here's a review I found. Pretty accurate.

They have it in the HUGE banquet room upstairs... it is quite an event..
good prime rib and beef ribs, plus tons and tons of other good stuff.
A real orgy of food. Personally, I enjoyed it better than anything I had in Vegas.
