The "BLT" thread
I love a good BLT sandwich. If a restaurant does it right, it's a sign that other things will be good as well. It's hard to screw it up, yet it's hard to make it special.

The Buckhead Diner in Atlanta used to have a "Salmon BLT - Hold The Salmon" on the menu - it was about $7 and really good. I'm not sure if they still serve it.

Worst has gotta' be Howard Johnson's on the Pa. Turnpike. An interminable wait for a BLT on wheat toast that finally came as soggy white bread, untoasted, limp lettuce, and one, count 'en one undercooked slice of bacon.

The Cafe at City Market, Savannah, Georgia, has (or had) this Applewood Smoked Bacon BLT that is absolutely amazing. It is on french bread and meets the criteria of being "special".
It has been a while, but they always seem to keep that on the menu.

After some time lurking on this excellent website, I never would have guessed that a thread about BLT sandwiches would move me to post, but here goes. Mel's Diner on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood has an excellent version of the BLT with the California twist of avocado on it. As JSE mentioned above, the addition of avocado makes it a truly special sandwich, but you also need the coolness of chilled iceberg lettuce, ripe tomatoes and great toasted bread to complete the taste sensation. Mel's is a tourist mecca, but they do BLT's right, IMHO.

Hate: I DETEST ordering a ham and cheese sandwich, and there is just SO MUCH FRIGGING HAM, it's like, "would you like some bread and cheese with that ham, sir?"
Talk about indigestion.Love: There's a good deli in back of the NY Times building on the south side of 44th Street, just past Carmine's - the 5 * Deli or something like that. I find Jewish deli's are best. My favorite: Rosen's across from St. Pat's. If I were ordering from them right now, I'd get a shaved boiled ham and gruyere sandwich with mustard and mayo on toasted rye or pumpernickel. Mmmm.
