My choice would be LG's Steakhouse in Palm Springs, CA.

No contest, it is Roy's -- despite Roy's not being a steakhouse! Truly exceptional (unlike the Roy's chain on the mainland which isn't quite up to the same standard as the real Roy's).

Probably one of my favorite anywhere ... all broiled on Kiawe wood ... incredibly delicious and "old school" (probably decorated in the early 60s). You can't go wrong.

For me Argentina has the best steak in the world and I did not get one bad feed there. I only wish I could remember the name of the steak house some of my Argentinean friends took me to! If I remember I will post it as it is not to be missed!

Woolloomooloo NSW 2011 is fantastic.

Bern's in Tampa: I had not been there in a number of years - went last week and it was even better then I remembered...and I had pretty fond memories of it. Food and experience just can't be beat - make sure to do the dessert room and the tour of the kitchen & wine cellar.

Chicago Chop House: Pure steak in a classic setting.

Shula's: Very nice filet. Best "chain" steakhouse IMO.

NYC steakhouses are overrated and overpriced. I've tried most of them and have had mixed results at almost all of the independents. Gallaghers and Sparks varied from sometimes great - other times lousy, but always expensive. Current favorite is Bobby Van's, but can always go with Morton's or Capital Grill for more consistency.

There are four Kingsley's in Sydney - the original one on King Street, for me, is far and away the best. Nice old-world atmosphere, fantastic steaks. Second choice - Kingsley's Bridge Street. Nice private room upstairs for a large group. The Lime St. (King St. Wharf) location is too cold and loud, and the fourth one, that hobarthoney mentions above, isn't even part of the same group. It's a nice place to go to be seen, and it has a little more emphasis on seafood as well.

If you have to go for one steak out in Sydney, make it Kingsley's King St. (Tucked away in an alley, in an old candle factory.)

Don't let anyone talk you into going to Prime (basement of the GPO). It's overpriced, the service is terrible, and the steak is mediocre.

Hal's is only a stone's throw from the excellent Bones in Buckhead, Atlanta, but hidden on a bit of a side street. Boisterous and loud as Bones is quiet - but terrific steaks, an owner who visits tables and makes sure everything iks just so - get the impression most patrons are locals.

Have also enjoyed:

Prime at Bellagio, Vegas - though Jean-George's delegate chef still does not know how to make a potato gratin ! Fine meat, sauces, apps and gorgeous room with lake and dancing fountain views

Circo - also at the Bellagio - this is Le Cirque's little brother, so to speak, and not really a steak house - but the lamb chops are the best I've had in the world !

Moishe's in Montreal - great beef, dessert pastry platter is a retro indulgent hoot

Ben Benson's in Manhattan - I like the lack of pretension and no-nonsense atmosphere - good meat and lots of choice

Page, AZ, has a steakhouse the name of which I don't remember. Great local Kaibab beef - the sides and everything else forgettable (as in foil-wrapped baked potatoes !) - earnest service from locals. Good food in a tourist town full of taco joints.

The Cote de Boeuf for two at the old Savoy River Restaurant in London was unbeatable - now that Ramsay or one of those super-chefs has come in and changed everything I don't stay there any more - but it may have survived...

House of Chan in Toronto looks like a typical chinese food dive, but has superb meat - the filet often unbeatable

Caesar's in Calgary - amazing tender beef in a road house atmosphere - much better than Hy's

The best of the Palm chain I've always thought is the one in downtown DC - a little more sophisticated and a lot quieter than its Manhattan ancestors !

Now this has caught my eye, or rather taste buds. I love Australian beef. Im going to be spending several days in Brisbane and an evening in SYD (although I may get in too late for dinner, not sure) early next month. Does anyone have any good suggestions for Australian steak in those two cities, other than teh Kingsley's mentioned above? Thanks.

You can have your Kingleys, but I'd much prefer heading Tasman's Oyster Bar and Steakhouse in Crown St

Give me an Evandale 270g Scotch Fillet (Served with King Island double cream mash with puree of roasted garlic & sage jus) any day

I will definitely second the vote for the Brekky Creek in Brisbane.

Another decent spot in Sydney, with a bit of action, atmosphere and fun, and a good place for steak (choose and cook your own, or let them cook it for you) is The Oaks on Military Road, Neutral Bay.

That place gets a ^ ^ from me as well!
