Fabulous dinner, must visit in my eyes. Imago: Had low expectations but had a very good dinner. 2 star level in my eyes. Moma: Got a star recently. Considering value it's the place to be with 69 € for a Tasting. Good 1 star level, would visit again. |
Review to come, but dined at Ya Ge in Taipei on Sunday night (1* in the 2018 Michelin guide; food is by and large right at that level, as is the service). What I found odd was that though the restaurant has a stated dress code of collared shirts for men that several parties included folks in T-shirts, and not just plain uncollared shirts, either. Maybe I'm being a bit fuddy, but is it asking too much to at least put on a polo instead of a loud tee when going to a nice restaurant? My other pet peeve was the party who were having 2-3 speakerphone conversations during dinner (unfortunately, seated at the next table over). Making a cell phone in a restaurant is bad enough, but doing so over speakerphone?! Seriously?
I understand restaurants not wanting to antagonize patrons, but honestly, someone needed to politely ask them to take their calls out into the lobby. |

Just got back from our Chicago trip. Below is the menu from Alinea we had. Below that is the menu from Oriole. Both dinners were amazing. Alinea doesn't need any intro here. But if you've missed out on Oriole or never heard of it, go!

This said I remember times when in nice restaurant no man (or only one who stood out) wear no tie. In my eyes everyone should decide him/ herself how to dress, even if many embaress themself by there choose imo…..
I think it's appropriate to dress better in a nice restaurant, but I think the times of jackets and ties being necessary for that consideration have long since passed. I think the patrons AND the restaurant should be equally respectful of each other: a patron should respect a fine dining restaurant by dressing reasonably well, and the restaurant should respect the patron by not dictating jacket and tie. I don't think there is anything wrong with a restaurant asking for collared shirts, but I also don't think it's that big a deal without a collar! Of course, I live in California for a reason. When I am in Paris, I very much respect the local tradition of being much better dressed, but I still refuse to wear a jacket that will make me too hot and uncomfortable. |

Went to RON Gastrobar (1 Star) in Amsterdam a couple of weeks back and was underwhelmed.
Also went to De Silveren Spiegel (Plate/Not Starred) in Amsterdam and had the tasting menu with pairings, was one of the best meals I've ever had. |

I don't care about collars, but I'm ok with Michelin restaurants enforcing rules such as no athletic shoes, no jeans with holes, no shirts with obnoxious slogans (I know, I know, who decides it's obnoxious), etc. |

Rome: La Terrazza 1 star
While we stayed at the hotel Eden in Rome we had dinner at La Terrazza which is awarded with 1 Michelin star.
We started with some Amuse Bouche: https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...023403f9b8.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2b9e91b35a.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3fa694fca3.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0fda433def.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e4187bbca5.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d8214ca200.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c673088aa7.jpg You may choose between a la carte, a choose of each one Antipasti, Primi and Secondi for 130 €, a 6 Course Tasting for 165 € and a 8 Course dinner for 200 €. Considering the 130 € menu doesn´t contain a desser which costs 28 € the Tastings are far better value. As we didn´t like many of the dishes the offered in the Tastings we went with the 3 course. First Course: Langoustine Variation https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...089255de42.jpg Scallops, mango and passion fruit https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...671efbad65.jpg Both dishes were good, I liked the langoustine more. Second Course: Gran riserva risotto with almond, curry and red prawns https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7071bb6bd7.jpg Calamarata pasta with steamed oyster, coconut and rocket https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5e53dd783d.jpg Again both dishes were good. Third couse: Organic salmon with mixed herbs https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8ff5736118.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bdf1094f94.jpg Personally this dish wasn´t my taste, but technically it was well done. Crispy red mullet, seaweed tartareand Kalamata olives https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d71507fe8a.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...611fd03b91.jpg A solid dish. Pre-dessert https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a013b37968.jpg Time for Dessert. They offer a card which was created together with Angelo Musa from Hotel Plaza Athénée. First I wanted choose the chocolate and pear soufflé but they told me it would need too much time. I love such things! We took Amalfi Lemon https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...25156914b6.jpg Taste was OK (not more, not less), but consideringthe price of 28 € I would skip dessert next time. Petit fours https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a96f0d60ea.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d69d4cb5d7.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a1d64e10c4.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6b20c75d59.jpg Over all a good dinner, even if I thought it was "generous" prized. If I would stay at the Eden I would eat here again. But I wouldn´t if I stay somewhere else. |

Rome: La Pergola 3 stars
When I decided to visit Rome I immediately booked a table at La Pergola.
I read it´s hard to get a reservation at La Pergola and even Waldorf concierge would have problems. With some time in advance I booked via email without any problem. The restaurant is elegant with an opulent style. I didn´t take pictures but you can see it at the Internet. They offer a 7 course menu (225 €), 10 course menu (260 €) and a la carte options. They were happy to offer us an individual 7 course menu without meat which we took. For drinks I got - after denining alcoholic options - an extensive list of Mineral water which were priced in a realistic range (no 100 € water like in some bling bling restaurants). In the end I went with a recommondation (Italian water of course). First some very good Amuse Bouche https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d1b4ebbe52.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6ba61bcf66.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...70ce461f82.jpg First course: Tuna, wild asparagus and almonds https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f8b7039f5.jpg A very good dish which made very curious for what´s comming. Second course: Squid filled with pink shrimps on Infusion of toasted shellfish with turnip tops https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...552e475701.jpg Well, simply a world-class dish. Third Course: Heart of lettuce stewed at high pressure https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...112df4a359.jpg Normally it comes with chicken but for us it were without it. To be honest this was my least favourite dish. Still good but I liked the others more. Fourth cuorse: Wholemeal "maccheroncini al ferretto" with shellfish, smoked aubergine coulis and croutons https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5b72b217d5.jpg Not a bif fan of wholemeal pasta and aubergine so I was sceptical. Nevertheless I loved it as it tasted so great. Fifth Course: Red mullet with spinach, Lemon and rasins https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e47d8865d6.jpg Also a high level dish. Sixth course: Turbot with asparagus and codium https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4f01b07adb.jpg Again a very good dish. Now the table changed for desserts https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f4786b88e5.jpg Pre-dessert https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f787b1235.jpg First petit fours https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...51455bc513.jpg The dessert: Ricotta cream with Marzipan, soft pistacchio and sorbet of candied orange https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0e9e90c44d.jpg Delicious! But more was waiting! The magic tower, filled with pralines: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ed50973a24.jpg This was really a great dinner and La Pergola deserves its 3 stars without doubt. For me it´s a must-eat when in Rome. |
Just had an 8 days trip in Tokyo and Hong Kong, to summarize:
Tokyo Sushi Ichijo (non Michelin) - great C/P for lunch (10k JPY for 11 pieces + rolls) which included Chu-toro, Kurumaebi, Uni, akagai and hamaguri. Surprisingly the best piece was the Akami. Nothing amazing but no complaints for the price Yakiniku Jumbo Hanare (non Michelin) - delicious A5 wagyu that didn't break the bank. very enjoyable, relaxed environment. the signature pieces were all amazing. Tempura Fukamachi (1 Star) - return visit. delicious top quality ingredient that were cooked perfectly. Scallop was my fav with the uni being a second. Added an order of Awabi but didn't find it special despite it being one of their signatures Takamitsu (1 Star) - my fav meal of the trip, hands down, and might be my fav meal in Tokyo ever. amazing, top quality ingredients (hon maguro from Yamaguchi, Aji that's apparently 7x the price of normal Aji and only they are crazy enough to buy, Hadate brand Hokkaido uni, caviar, etc.) and an incredibly skilled chef. Takamitsu-san is also incredibly friendly and quite a showsman (likes to display the ingredients and courses on top of LV suitcases). Perhaps the most fun meal I've ever had along with Den. Hong Kong Lung King Heen (3 Stars) - second fav meal of the trip. best high-end dim sum I've ever had (beating my previous fav, Tin Lung Heen at the RC). Abalone tart, pork bun, and abalone and fish maw noodles were absolutely incredible. Yat Lok (1 Star) - return visit to this dive roast goose restaurant. delicious as always. Kam's Roast Goose (1 Star) - first time visit. did it to directly compare against Yat Lok. Personally, I find Yat Lok a bit better (I find they have a richer flavour) but Kam's is very good as well. Kam's is also much cleaner and comfortable to sit in so if that matters to you then this is a good choice Happy to go into more details if you want more info on any particular restaurants listed above. |
Interesting article (unfortunately in German): https://mobil.stern.de/genuss/essen/...n-8692072.html A starred restaurant in Hamburg claims it must close due to repeated vandalism and theft. Interesting enough the restaurant is located in a neighborhood which is known for vandalism by radical left riff-raff. |
Had lunch at Gramercy Tavern with a few guys after a long night out on Friday. Nothing cures a hangover like a delicious burger :)
|
Gagnaire's restaurant in Shanghai. Great service, lovely room, food underwhelming. Don't get me wrong it was well cooked but just not oustanding in any way. 88/100
Ode (1*) in Tokyo. Some excellent dishes, some simply well-executed/technically capable. I like it best when the chef pushes the boundaries and when he does he really shows he can make magic happen. This is one to watch - 89/100 (On a sour note, as the only gaijin (foreigner) at the counter I noticed that I was consistently poured less wine in the pairing menu than other people. I did not get a good vibe at all from the sommelier from the moment I walked in, but this is obviously a very subjective observation, so I'll leave it at that.) |
Had a few impressive meals while on our anniversary trip up the California coast these past 2 weeks: Dinner at 2* Baumé, Palo Alto. Truly impressive food and wine pairings, but the prices are exorbitant at $398 per person for the tasting menu and at least $300 per person for the wine pairings. We did the $400 per person wine pairing and our total bill came to almost $1900 for the two of us. That being said, it was the best squab I’ve ever tasted. Worth doing once...but the exorbitant pricing makes it unlikely we’d return. Lunch at 1* Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil, Rutherford. A staple lunch for whenever we come to Napa Valley, this was again a delight and with a wonderful view of the Valley. Did the 3 course tasting menu with wine pairings and really enjoyed it. The roasted chicken main was a bit over cooked, but otherwise everything was delicious. The champagne pairing was a bit strong for us on dessert, but the whole meal was delicious and a bargain. Dinner at 3* Restaurant at Meadowood, St Helena. Our first return in almost 5 years to our favorite in Napa Valley. Whole resort and restaurant has undergone more contemporary and modern transformation in aesthetic that we enjoyed. The service and ambience were spectacular. The team here really is amazing, always willing to relax and go with the flow if you show you are—and we always are! The wine pairings were phenomenal (two of us did the super wine pairing while my husband did the regular pairing). The food was absolutely delicious, highlighted incredibly by a creamy course with caviar that blew us completely away. That being said, that was the only course that really was mind blowing so it felt a bit 2* meal more than 3* extravaganza. But overall, we were extremely pleased and would return again in a heartbeat. Dinner at 1* Kin Khao, San Francisco. My first visit and I liked it...but I wasn’t wowed. The food was good. Some of our entrees were a bit on the dull side. Others were better. Nothing really blew me away. |

I had the Amuse Bouche menu at the Dolder Grand (2*, Zurich) today and it was fantastic. Expertly prepared food, very nice tastes, and interesting flavors. Best of all it was a fantastic value. There were 26 distinct items in total for only 112 CHF. The head chef was kind enough to speak with us after and was very courteous. Even the bread was fresh, tasty, and the dipping pastes/sauces were fantastic.

Rome: Moma 1 star
Moma Rome I reserved as it was awarded a Michelin star shortly before our visit. With 69,00 € their tasting menu was a real bargain.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ecf8352238.jpg The arrival was not so great. After we entered we were asked for our reservation and they weren´t able to find it. In the end I had to show the confirmation e-mail which I fortunately still had. We had to wait a few minutes till our table was ready. This was all not very welcoming and really wired as during the whole evening some tables remained empty. We took the tasting menu but first got good bread and amuse bouche. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...956fd88258.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b99aa08642.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...740c64687e.jpg The menu started with a seasonal garden. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...eea2db2810.jpg Next came Spaghetti with Bottarga. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1141e6f57b.jpg Grilled octopus https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...618f7a0c30.jpg Pre-dessert https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3a9df2a584.jpg Hazelnut https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1bb428e125.jpg Petit fours https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ec12d0f3cb.jpg The quality of the food was very good, service friendly but not as polished as at other starred restaurants. Especially considering the price I absolutely recommend it. |
Had to cancel my reservation at Bar Crenn tonight thanks to UA hitting me up with a 3.5 hour delay on EWR-SFO :( Decided to book dinner at Birdsong for tomorrow night to make up for it, though :) I was very surprised to see availability for Benu and Quince the night before as well! I was also contemplating Eight Tables, but I think it might be a tad too adventurous for my wife’s palate given her current state. |

How do you all go about research restaurants in cities that specifically DON'T have a michelin guide for them? I've had some extremely good food in cities that I've had no guidance for, but I always feel like it's a bit more of a luck-thing... (and I really don't trust google/yelp/you name it)

In the old days, I would go on Chowhound. Nowadays, I ping my chowhound friends whom I have met over the years! I do think most reliable are local foodies |

CNN Travel. Even local city rankings. Then I see what restaurants seem consistently included on multiple lists. I often then go to TripAdvisor to make sure the people with lots of fine dining reviews or other good restaurant reviews also find them appealing and impressive. I sometimes ask a concierge their opinions, but usually by then I have a great idea already.

Ephernite in Taipei - it apparently just missed out on a Michelin rating and I can see why. It's just not that great. Food looks pretty, service is quite good, but it's not up to michelin standard. Not worth a detour in my view.
|
Birdsong (1* in SF) was absolutely phenomenal. Literally loved every bite, save for the very first one (which was a very innovative seaweed dish). One of those meals where both the innovative and more traditional dishes were out of this world. Truly a bargain at $190/person and probably the second-best meal I’ve had this year, ahead of Benu and behind only Azurmendi (3* in Bilbao). |
Heinz Beck Tokyo?
Has anyone been? I've been to La Pergola Rome - but wondered if the Tokyo location is even close,

A friend told me about it last year. Usually I like to discover places to eat on my own, but I decided to follow a few of their recommendations for the best places for Khinkali in Tbilisi, Georgia. I have to say, not bad... Not bad at all! :D |
Winter Garden by Caino Florence 1 star
We had dinner at Winter Garden by Caino at the St. Regis hotel which was awarded 1 Michelin star. I had reserved a table in advance.
When we arrived we were greated by 2 members of staff. We had our room key in hand but were (sceptical) asked what we want. When we said that we wanted to eat at Winter Garden we were asked if we had a reservation. Then they searched in their computer to find it and after it escorted us to our table. I generally hate such a behavior, but I get furious if I see that only 3 of perhaps 20 tables were occupied. If in such a situation a hotelguest arrives there is no question for a reservation. It should only be: "Welcome, may we Show your your table.". The restaurant shares the space with the bar. In generally I can live with it eben if at the other tables sit people in shorts. BUT what I hate is loud (terrible) music and that there were already parts of a buffet in the back. For me this restaurant lacked style and I hated this place for a Michelin starred dinner. It´s a place to quickly through in some food but not to have a nice dinner. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c777088602.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...752069478a.jpg We were ready to order. The tasting menu wasn´t suitable for us and no alternative was offered. So we ordered a la carte. First we had a mocktail - pretty good. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...832290e207.jpg Fortunately now a very attentive waitress took care of us who provided very good Service. Next the amuse bouche - OK https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...77b57a0905.jpg Now our first courses. Low temperature poached egg, served with bearnaise sauce foam, asparagus, caviar and pan-brioche https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b2a11ce325.jpg The taste was weak, nothing special. Chef personal version of Apulian's typical dish - Rice cream, sautéed mussels, potatoes foam, salmon roe https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d8a440005a.jpg This dish was not very enjoyable, it was simply not very tasty. At this moment I googled if it really still holds 1 star at guide Michelin (no joke). Main course: Pan fried turbot fillet, mashed parsnip, sea lettuce https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...927f100621.jpg No, not great. I think you can see it on the picture. So far away form Michelin star level. We discussed if we order dessert. In the end I decided to do. But first the pre-dessert. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e6c3547b78.jpg Our desserts were each 26 €, see what we get: https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7e61ac841d.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...81683c38cd.jpg The taste was OK, but especially the chocolate mouse was at this Price Point a joke. Petit fours https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3c7013f215.jpg I think everybody knows what I think about this dinner. I really can´t recommend Winter Garden, for me it was no wonder the restaurant was nearly empty and it wouldn´t be a wonder if this restaurant is next year on the list of restaurants who lost their Michelin star. |
Just been to Ishikawa 1* in Shinjuku Tokyo.
It was nice kaiseki but I think overpriced for what it offered. 35kY = circa $350. Drinks weren't particularly expensive but I stuck with o-cha. They did embody Japanese service by converting some of my unused salmon rice into a rice ball to take home in an impressively expensive looking doggy bag :) The restaurant was beautiful and of course impossible to find. |
