I had tortilla soup last night but with grated cheddar/jack, cilantro, and sour cream

Happy to send the recipe to you if you're interested.

Thank you but shrooms are on my absolute hate list so I don't know if it would be the same. But I might try some goat cheese on my regular chicken tortilla soup next time. I always have it on hand.
Actually I sometimes put goat cheese on chilaqilles so I know it works with Mexicanish food

Good old fashioned roast chicken tonight - Nigel Slater's recipe with lemon and garlic and a vermouth based gravy. Never fails!

USA_flyer Feb 19, 2021 12:00 pm

Golden butternut squash and sage risotto.

Lush.

It was the watercress that sounded amazing to me!

Tonight, in honor of a Lent Friday (we are not Catholic), breaded pan fried grouper, fries, homemade tartar sauce. Maybe a veg, maybe not. Sometimes it just works out that your dinner lines up with the calendar :).

My better half is doing a chicken cacciatore.

My only contribution will be selecting the wine. I just picked up a Dolcetto Dogliani Superiore that may fit the bill.

I'll probably open a can of black beans and smash them up with some herbs and spices to accompany.

Last night, I took some of the leftover piggie and rendered it down, and made sandwiches on Acme torpedo rolls, with a schmear of the smashed black beans, some smoked gouda, red bell pepper strips, a piece of romaine, and of course, sellanchro.

For tonight, I'm thinking of stopping by this place https://www.newdumplingfood.com/ - friends have recommended, and say it is good. I'll probably cook up that kale in the fridge with some garlic to accompany.

I'm envious of your dinner because I love grouper!

In an effort to save all our sanity, as we have been home bound since last Wednesday due to ice and snow and the cars are still iced in, I convinced my housemate to walk to the nearest open restaurant to pick up dinner. So we are having Americanized Chinese food: hot and sour soup, shrimp fried rice, mooshu pork, and chicken with broccoli.

I don't think that I have ever had grouper nor do I ever remember seeing it in a store. Is it rare?

Not rare, but not frequently seen around the US West Coast.

Ian loves to go to FL for grouper. I myself also may not have had it. I’ve had some white fish in Minneapolis / St Paul as well as lake white fish in Wisconsin :-)

Its definitely more common in Florida and the Gulf

phillygold Feb 19, 2021 8:55 pm

Dinner for us tonight consisted of broiled black sea bass (which I caught), mushroom risotto and sweet collard greens. I need to begin thinning out my supply of fish from last summer and fall. Tomorrow night will be summer flounder(fluke) and maybe some ling. Perhaps a fish fry is in order, I will make some potato salad and cornbread. Conservatively, I still have over 200 lbs of fish in the freezer downstairs.

There are pretty strict fishing quotas as I understand, so you don't see it in large quantities outside Florida. I'm more inclined to see it as a restaurant special (pre-pandemic) than in a grocery store or fish monger.

You probably had walleye...maybe perch. Both are fresh water white fleshed fish, indigenous to those areas.

Or actual freshwater whitefish. Whitefish and perch are common around Lake Michigan, but I don't think walleye are fished commercially on Lake Michigan -- maybe Lake Erie, Huron and Superior?

gaobest Feb 19, 2021 9:15 pm

Broiled salmon
leftover king crab legs
mixed green salad
mashed potatoes & gravy
oven steak fries (optional gravy)

From a recreational standpoint, the limit in Florida is one fish per day. That includes black, red and gag grouper. Goliath grouper must be released immediately. I’m sure that the commercial quotas are pretty stiff as well.

EkekoBWI Feb 19, 2021 11:55 pm

Cast iron-seared swordfish piccata with a side of red chard to brighten up the plate. A good way to kick off the weekend, which will probably be filled with stews.

Practically any restaurant in Florida that serves seafood offers grouper. A grouper sandwich would appear to be the #1 fish demanded by tourists, at least on the gulf side. I prefer snapper, but there’s not a big difference. Both command a premium price as they are wild caught. Both are likely to be fresh as they are local, although you can find frozen filets at the grocery store. If you live here, you probably know a restaurant or two on the coast that has its own fishing fleet.

5 day old seafood ? No thanks ---could have been unsafe.
This is odd since you obsess about frozen vs fresh etc. Really , you could have been sick. Taste is not always an indication of bacteria .

I believe my wife bought this at the Fresh Farms in Niles. They have an amazing seafood area that covers a large corner of the store. If you're up that way (or maybe there's one closer), give it a try. Each of the stores is a little different so not sure if they all have great seafood.

Very likely the case. Outsiders are always trying to put some other name on our Whitefish :). I didn't know that about walleye, but it actually makes sense when you consider that every restaurant in WI serves it, but we only see it around here occasionally.

Grouper, Snapper, and Stone Crabs are three of my favorite reasons to visit Florida. I have no idea how we got grouper here in Chicago for my dinner last night, but we do see it in the better fish markets sometimes. Or it's a mislabeled generic filet, as the fishing industry is famous for. But it fried up nicely with a panko crust and was quite tasty!

I haven't been to Fresh Farms before, but looking at the website has me intrigued. It seems as if there are two in Niles -- which do you recommend? Also, I note that the website says that their international food selection varies according to the neighborhood. I'm guessing the one on Devon is more heavily influenced toward Indian/Pakistani/Middle Eastern food, and I'm assuming the other two in NIles might have more Korean and Eastern European products? (Though judging from the Patel Brothers in Glenview, there's definitely a strong Indian community there, as well.) Maybe I'll check out the one on Touhy this weekend.

Eastbay1K Feb 20, 2021 11:10 am

Last night, piggy and chive dumplings, and green onion pancakes from a local dumpling shop, along with some kale I made, sauteed with fresh garlic, red chili flakes, salt, and a bit of honey.

Served with a Bourgogne Blanc.

Tonight will be frozen Sicilian.

gaobest Feb 20, 2021 10:53 pm

Cheese fondue with pretzels, ciabatta, apples

Ok, it wasn't frozen. With a 5:30pm reservation, and nearby, but not too close, heat lamps, the food didn't ever get "that cold."

1) Stuffed and fried zucchini flowers
2) Bucatini with a delicious sardine / pine nut mush topping (that's the best way to describe it, I've had it before.)
3) Porchetta with roasted potatoes
4) A pleasant bottle of Nero d'Avola
5) Little cannoli, to go, served with a digestivo, at home.

wrp96 Feb 21, 2021 3:53 pm

Hashbrowns and eggs from Waffle House

phillygold Feb 21, 2021 5:17 pm

Grilled chile lime rubbed pork chops
Rice
String beans

gaobest Feb 21, 2021 7:10 pm

Ground beef chili (Kitchn recipe)
big pretzel
leftover steak fries
spaghetti

I want to make a big salad but our child wanted my spouse and me off the floor and upstairs. Our child is video chatting with classmates while eating supper. It’s more important for me that my child consumes supper so I’ll sort the salad later. We brought up our bag of Girl Scout cookies - s’mores and thin mint.

Asparagus and Gruyere tart. I couldn't find puff pastry so used crescent rolls. Puff pastry would have been better .

Woah! That’s effectively a gigantic cheese and asparagus croissant, isn’t it? I have to go back to eating low carb next week (took a break as I was celebrating my 50th, then Valentine’s, then Pancake Day), just got a soybean powder cookie left to bake, now I want a giant millefeuille... waaaaah! 😫
(I don’t get nearly so excited about puff pastry)

lol--well now that you mention it, I guess it is. I should be doing low carb too---maybe right after this is gone. :p
