plus that checkout factor - if Trader Joe’s had self-checkout, then I couldn’t buy any wine there. This is why I won’t get wine at Safeway or Costco, although both places don’t carry anything as cheap as $2 bottles. Actually I don’t even know if 2 buck chuck is even still available :-)

You still haven't explained why you need any wine at all for fish tacos. And I am not buying that $1 here or there is gonna make a difference in your life. BTW, 2 buck chuck is now $3 I think. :p

I don’t make fish tacos but Japanese sake is a given with any fish I make. If it’s not used to marinade the fish, it will feature in the cooking seasonings, and even in a cream stew/chowder it will end up in the white sauce.
Problem is that I normally bring back about 4 litres (just under a gallon) from our annual visits to Tokyo - ridiculously cheap there - and go through it over the year. Had to cancel our last trip and have been making do with decent - but HEAVILY discounted - Sherry. Don’t use wine as it goes off much more quickly.

ooh I like the idea of sake or sherry - hmmm. I’ll look at pricing. Yes, wine has such a shelf life after it’s open. Sigh.

If it’s cheaper, a dry vermouth works wonders too.

I mentioned dry vermouth and it will keep in the fridge for a few months.
For some reason gaobest doesn't want to explain why he has to use wine for fish tacos.

ooh I forgot about dry vermouth. I’ll have to google some recipes. I like using wine also with sautéed mushrooms and/or onions.

Mr. CE is making osso buco and risotto tonight. Yum!

Dinner tonight was in the PHX Admirals Club, after flying to the Midwest and back this weekend.

Made to order guac, mac and cheese with bacon, and a tossed salad. Nothing but water to drink, as I had a few IPAs in route.

I have decided I don't care enough. We have all given him multiple suggestions & I am done. I am filing it under why he lets a kid decide what food adults are allowed to eat and why he can have cooked pork but not raw. I wonder if the kid realizes that all cooked pork was raw at one time. :p

Yep.

Tonight's dinner was chicken with a garlic marinade, topped with parmesan cheese, served with mixed veggies. After watching the first quarter of the Steelers game, I decided to bake and now have most of a pan of chocolate fudge brownies and a pan of Rice Krispies Treats (not really baking for those).

I was going to say your dinner is like Groundhog Day.....until I got to a bowl of cereal for dessert. Huh?

yes; I took my walk and returned home at 4, and we were hungry so it was an easy supper to have ready by 5 or 5:30; already forget timing. I wanted to make pizza but I’ll maybe do it tomorrow or Tuesday for luncheon. Maybe Tuesday as we will have king crab legs on Monday supper so I might want to cook something Asian for my luncheon! Or I might cheat and get a rotisserie chicken because then I can make curried chicken salad for sandwich luncheons for the week.

Can I ask why you always call your lunch “luncheon”? It seems an odd choice when it is just a regular lunch at home?

Definition of luncheon : a formal usually midday meal as part of a meeting or for entertaining a guest; a company luncheon; a fund-raising luncheon

I just assumed it's some sort of regional American thing. Supper to me is a light meal you have at a cocktail party etc not dinner.

People of an older generation and more working class background here still refer to dinner as tea and in some rural parts lunch is still called dinner.

I also live in California and know & have know many people from SF (where gaobest lives). Never once have I ever heard anyone use the word luncheon unless it was several people and under a more formal or business setting. Even then it is rarely used...more likely "I met some friends for lunch" or " I scheduled lunch with a client".

gaobest Jan 11, 2021 8:32 pm

red king crab legs with optional garnishes
mixed green salad
oven-baked steak fries
raw tofu

slowly and carefully we will have a new trend of people enjoying their luncheons.

do they make miniature tongs for the steak fries?

Just a nice pub dinner at one of my fav local pubs. Had a steak and a beer. We had a nice walk home in perfect Sydney summer weather. Even bought a Frosty Fruit.

I love this little part of the world.

ETA: Sorry for the non-food related pic I was just really enjoying a warm summer night's stroll.

I still agree with others on the correct usage of the word, but points for a good response and for making me laugh at 8:30 am (that's not easy to do).

Realised I hadn't had liver for ages, so I'm doing grilled calves' liver with sage, butter and onions tonight. Will accompany with mashed potato and kalettes.

Followed by sliced oranges with pistachios, pomegranate seeds and coconut yoghurt.

I enjoy my lunch every day. Can’t remember the last time I attended a luncheon. Nor do I suspect you do either.

I love liver! Have been eating it since childhood.

Had to look that up. I'll now be watching for kalettes in my local grocery, but pretty sure they won't be easy to find around here.

Can't wait to see the comments you get on the liver :). Personally I have no problem with it and will eat it if it's served, just not something I'd choose over another cut of beef.

Well we sure as hell shouldn't be having luncheons during covid. Somebody has some splaining to do.

wrp96 Jan 12, 2021 11:32 am

Tonight's dinner will be from a local Italian place. A good antipasto platter and Caesar salad to start. I will have veal scallopine as my main and a bite of ricotta cheesecake for dessert. Oh and a dry red wine of some kind. My family and I are celebrating Christmas and my birthday together as I traveled over Christmas and today is the first day I'm off isolation.

As to what to name the meal. I live in the south so it can be confusing.

Usually the midday meal is lunch and the evening meal is dinner. Unless the midday meal is the larger meal in which case that would be dinner, and the lighter evening meal would be supper.

Luncheon is something fancy you'd have with your ladies club, for example, usually at the country club. Maybe gaobest is just trying to make the midday meal special for his child.

Maybe you could wrap some up in vegetable packaging to get it past your kid.

Mashed chicken livers was apparently something I couldn't get enough of when I was about two. I have hated the taste of organ meat since then.

Similar in the rural midwest as well, where I grew up, especially among dairy farm families who eat meals at unusual times, and sometimes 4 meals per day. Not as much these days with automation, but when I was growing up, it was not uncommon for a farmer to be up at 4 am for the first milking and finishing the last one around 9 pm. Supper always followed dinner, whether it was 3 meals or 4. Sometimes "lunch" wasn't eaten, because it was "dinner". "Luncheons" were unknown in that part of the country :).

Tonight I'm making a half-arsed jambalaya. Shrimp and sausage only. We don't have green peppers but do have red. Other than that, pretty much the classic recipe. Extra hot sauce on the side.
