NYT's Middle Eastern chicken with lemon/garlic yogurt sauce (one of our favorites and we typically make it for guests and never have left overs, so it's nice to just cook it for the two of us)
Couscous (my mother who grew up in Morocco and insists on making it the authenticity way would hate that I make it from a cardboard box)
Cherry tomatoes from my garden

gaobest Jul 29, 2020 7:36 pm

Tired from a fun sunny hot (76??) afternoon at Marin’s pool. So fun.
tartine toast
peanut butter
morello cherry jam
butter
leftover thai iced tea

Yes, ours does the water too. Only thing I don't like about it is that new filters are like $50 each, for a piece of plastic.

yeah, our LG fridge filter (Oem) is also $50. I’m not yet ready to buy the knockoff.

I would never pay $5 for 2 avocados and (more like .69 for one). Just buy it a couple days ahead when it is rock hard and it will ripen at room temp in a couple days. I do understand that there are some great already made guacs and pico de gallos out there though and i was just pointing out that grilled guac is a different flavor. BTW--what are triceratops taco shells?

I don't still have the article but I know Consumer Reports says that the most common thing to break on a refrigerator is the ice machine. And of course it doesn't happen to everyone but I do know 2 people who had extensive damage with water slowly dripping. One of my friends now shuts off her water if she even goes away for a few days because of what happened. Anyway, I guess I am different than most on here...I easily make my own ice as needed in silicone giant cube trays...They take up very little space in the freezer (more room for food!) and I don't care what the shape is. If i ever need more ice for a party or something....$1 for a big bag at the local dollar store.

safeway avocados are $5/2 - I am not going to visit other shops for avocado savings. It’s not essential like when seeking Bays :-)
We use about $5 worth of ice a day. Best to make it.

Fun fact---Israeli couscous is not really couscous...it is a pasta. I love it though. Regular couscous is a grain.

Leftover pork fried rice.

Actually, couscous is a pasta, it's just smaller.

When I was growing up in Israel, the product that is marketed in the US as Israeli couscous was known as פתיתים, ptitim (flakes).

I only bought one box of Israeli couscous at TJs but we haven’t yet opened it because we enjoy the Near East brand.

Near East makes several types of couscous, most are traditional couscous. Their Pearled Couscous is similar to Israeli couscous.

I definitely bought smaller sizes than Israeli and so yum. Surreal how fast it cooks.

no judgement ....those crescent rolls are good. I use them in place of puff pastry sometimes .
How are you grilling sugar snap peas?

gaobest Jul 31, 2020 1:09 am

I use cans and boxes all the time. Zero guilt judgment etc.
it’s still way less bad than what restaurants use.

I’ve lowered my organic obsession because of no more restaurants. I used to eschew produce if it wasn’t organic because it balanced with the conventional served at restaurants. Now I’ll buy the spray-bombed product of organic isn’t available because I’m still eating way less chemicals than before.

lhrsfo Jul 31, 2020 2:41 am

Last night it was grilled lamb cutlets and grilled capsicums, followed by roasted apricots and pecorino with black truffle.

I use a medium/heavy gauge aluminum pie pan, give it a light spray of Pam, then put the veggies in the pan and season. Pan of veggies then goes over the coals while whatever meat cooks.

I like the idea of baking them on a bed of rock salt. I have chunky salt which might be similar. I’m going to try it. So excited. Normally I’m just puncturing the potatoes and adding butter or olive oil for the rotation.

Pacific cod, zucchini, tomatoes, sun dried tomatoes, shallots, basil and oregano cooked in parchment paper. (All veggies but the shallots and sun dried tomatoes were home grown.)

No sun dried ants for seasoning? I hear that in some cuisines, Mexican perhaps, they add quite a bit of flavor. Two birds, one stone...

I would be thrilled to have sun-dried ants. Instead I have very much alive ants that are still destroying my front yard.

You can definitely call me a mass murderer, because I've killed thousands thus far this year.

Homemade salisbury steak with mashed potatoes. A decent Napa cab alongside.

Yotam Ottolenghi's version of Chicken Marbella (this one calls for dates instead of prunes; the recipe is in his book , the US edition has US measurements).

I love Chicken Marbella but for some reason it is more of a winter dish to me. But you can't go wrong with Ottolenghi!

Blueberry muffins
Butter lettuce salad
Pineapple chunks
Baked potato

It's a perfect dish for a hot summer evening when paired with a bottle of a crisp Muscadet.

This doesn't sound like convenience to me but obviously YMMV.
I am curious---does your wife cook as well? Do you take turns or spit up stuff?

No kidding. Seriously, gaobest, you need to add some variety and nutrition to your kid’s meals. Cheeseburgers, pizza and penne with parm seem to be the only things he will eat. I get that you want to let him choose what he eats but sometimes you have to insist on a bit of variety/healthier options. Some green leafy veg would be a start.

This. And cooking 3 different types of pasta, plus three different desserts... It's like running a restaurant!

Lol the pasta bin lets me cook the penne and bucatini together. then the fresh pasta simmered while the pasta was being plated.
I didn’t want any fresh pasta or penne - I got to eat my desired food :-)
Our house has a lot of balance :-)

There’s enough balance esp with snacks.

HAHA!
I gave up...there are never any leafy green or rarely any veggies or salads or any fiber. I agree with you though...pasta or cheeseburgers have very little nutritional value.

$hit, it seems than my brother and his family will stay for dinner tonight. Luckily, I did thaw some beef and chicken for fajitas as well as picked up another bag of flour tortillas yesterday as I know they won't eat corn ones, yey always ask for chips.

But tomorrow, I will smoke a pork butt. They aren't Muslim but they and those kids have some aversion to the hog. So Bougie.

Home made meat lovers (pepperoni and hot Italian sausage) pan pizza on the grill for dinner last night. My best effort yet. Got the caramelization on the crust just right.

There are a few pizza forums, like FT, which have threads on dough and there is a Dough Doctor on one of them.
