Here here
happy Easter

so was there rice for curry or just for part of meal?
I prefer rice with curry. I still really struggle to picture baguette with any Asian food including banh mi. It’s just so new of an idea.

beautiful meal of course!!!

Yes , thanks , Happy Easter !!

No one wanted rice ! Or the French fries so they were not served .. a French bakery here does a mean baguette .
Curry is often served with “ French loaf “ here for mopping up 😉 ( same with chilli crab when pairing with man tou is always welcomed ) . Actually a norm to have curry with even bread when there is no baguette . This is from when I can remember in these parts ( been flying since I was one , perhaps even younger , so it has been decades 😂 , not 3 score & 10 though .. )

The plum crumble for dessert was also “ saved “ along with the aforementioned ice cream as all were stuffed and declined !!

Need to get flying , latest in Q4 🤞🏻

I made a tagliere misti with coppo, salami, prosciutto, parmesan, and marinated olives. A valpolicella ripasso to drink.

Baguettes are great for curries and some stews. They work great for mopping up liquids, especially if fresh out of the oven or toasted. Roti/naan works as well. I love using challah to clean up curries. Some asian dishes (with bread) you'd likely find interesting...
,
,
(
and
as well).
,
, Then some more traditional stuff like peking duck (the wraps). If I can order the braised meat from "lu rou fan" (Taiwanese braised meat on rice dish), it makes a great dip for bread. Banh mi is just the tip of the iceberg...

There's more, but I think you get the idea.

Edited: I need to figure out how to post youtube links without the pre-image shots...

agreed that bread is great for stews - ive had western Chinese food with buns / “pita” etc in lieu of rice. I probably just ignore all the bread with Asian food and just prefer rice.

There is that too. But you have to have the right type of bread to go with the dish. Rye (for example) typically doesn't go too well with a lot of the dishes I listed. But the fluffier breads seem to mix well. Same goes for rice (eg, wild rice often doesn't work, but basmati or jasmine rice often does).

Now that you've got me thinking about this, I'm tempted to get some curries tomorrow....argh!

You're welcome. Posting all that now I'm making a shopping list for tomorrow. I've got an indian place nearby that I can get some curry from... will have to stop at the local asian market to get some roti. Not quite as fluffy as the ones that they get in South East Asia, but I'll take what I can get. I would love to learn how to make the fluffy kind of roti...

Are those the Mary’s gone crackers GF crackers?
your menu is a beautiful inspiration for GF / lactose-free food. Typing lactose makes me need to ask for your Caesar salad ingredients besides the artisanal lettuce.

No, Trader Joe Savory Thin crackers which I think are made with rice flour and are surprisingly good (I am not usually a GF fan) and super crunchy. And popcorn is the perfect gluten free snack. Everything else was pretty easy but I would have preferred to have the dessert with pound cake or cookies with the fruit.
Caesar salad does not normally have dairy anyway. Aged pecorino romano is sheep's milk cheese which doesn't have the same lactose. And goat cheese is fine. (Parmesan) cheese because it is aged it is also fine with most lactose intolerant. Dressing is standard---lemon juice, garlic, anchovy, dijon, egg yolk, worcestershire, oil. Instead of croutons (no gluten) I used Whisps Parmesan Crisps and I liked them as much as croutons. https://whisps.com/products/parmesan-cheese-crisps
and yes--good spot on the artisan romaine!!

ooh I picture goat / sheep cheese to have lactose. Great to know they’re excluded. And I assumed any aged cheese have lactose. Good lessons for lactose sensitive folk.
I know who loves artisan romaine and who got some at sco at Costco! :-)

Lactose is produced in cow's milk products. Most other animals ...sheep, goat will produce no or very little lactose. And cow's milk cheese that has been aged for a very long time are also safe (like a good parm) to eat if intolerant.

Funny. I went to a friend's house across the street to borrow a seafood cracker. While I was there she kept offering me stuff to borrow and one was this really cute crab. I didn't use all the other stuff but I texted her a pic of how cute he looks and she told me to keep him!! She gave him to me!! I was so excited & of course I said she could borrow him. He is part of the Lotus Metlox Pottery that I think someone else here has..
But now--the more I look at him, the more I think that pose is a little obscene. :D I still really love it and maybe even more but it totally had me laughing all night. Just me?

it’s a bit hubba hubba of a pose - the smile is a factor.

Generally, in the northeast along the coast, although you'll find it in a lot of places here. The original was made famous in New Haven, Connecticut. Pepe's is supposedly the original.

The "kid-friendly" Easter meal of meatloaf went well. No pics due to the family's rush to eat as soon as they were called, but even with gelatin, it hold shape in the middle. I don't think I worked the mix into the meat enough to be honest, but I haven't thought about making a meatloaf in at least a decade. I'm not buying/grilling chops or steaks for a 5 year old out of principle and those kids don't eat ham, so hence a meatloaf.

After eating it, white rolls, and mashed potatoes, I was a brick. I only try to only eat white flour once a week for pizza, so I don't know how I had energy as a little kid (we went to whole wheat bread at about age 8).

Cafe, carneros, napa supper:
fried chicken with mashed potatoes & blanched (??) collard greens - I gotta learn how to cook collard greens
wedge salad
hush Puppies
kobe beef burger with cheddar & fries
mini donuts

Talenti chocolate ice cream
talenti black raspberry chocolate chip ice cream

CMK10 Apr 6, 2021 12:33 pm

Leftover Brats and potato salad. We had a cookout last night but didn't finish all the food.

Beautiful outside so we enjoyed our second backyard dinner of the year. (Normally it would also be our second outdoor dinner of the year, but we've been bundling up for outdoor restaurant meals all winter...)

Trader Joe's salad with peanut dressing and crispy noodles

Pan seared, cumin crusted sablefish

gfunkdave Apr 6, 2021 6:04 pm

As an aperitif while cooking*, I had a martini. Then, I had a frozen pizza (Screamin' Sicilian Supreme) and a salad (Little Leaf Farms crispy baby lettuce, baby carrots, red pepper, cucumber; green goddess dressing). And an Austin St Patina Pale Ale.

*cooking: unwrapping the frozen pizza and putting it in the oven, and chopping veggies for the salad

I decided to go on a short diet, whereas my dinners this week will consist of salads consisting of shredded lettuce, julienned carrots, diced tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, bacon bits, and sunflower seeds. All topped with a creamy ranch dressing flavored with bacon. After reading the last 2 days of posts, I forgot I bought some croutons, so tomorrow will include them as well.

I made Ethiopian lamb with tomato-based gravy for dinner this weekend. Visually, it was very appealing, but I really should have gotten the meat from a butcher. The vacuum-sealed, Safeway-bought kind wasn't as good as it could have been.

Leftover deep dish pizza (pepperoni / mushroom) reheated with added diced onions
Nopalito tortilla chips
guacamole
Plain bagel with melted cheddar
raw tofu

It's slowly happening. After getting our shot #1 yesterday, we sat on the patio and toasted with a white rioja. Didn't eat outside but had all the windows open for the first time this year. Bring on summer.

My God, I believe you humbly stumbled into the perfect dinner.
I miss Green Goddess. Loved it when I was a kid. Then in my 20's I lived near an Italian restaurant in northern IL that had an amazing homemade Green Goddess.
My wife doesn't like it, so if I buy the Wishbone (or whatever brand it is), I'm the only one who eats it. I'll do that some day to see how that one fares.

Tonight, pork loin on the grill - if it doesn't rain, if the pork loin thaws in time, and if I get the propane tanks exchanged this afternoon. There are a lot of "if's" and not many backup plans yet.

Continuing to hone our wood oven pizza skills. This time we heated up the oven a bit hotter and had a bit more radiant heat from actively burning wood. Also tried a new dough using both active yeast and sourdough discard to get the flavor of sourdough but with a shorter fermentation time.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9d347b439.jpeg
Green chile, pepperoni, black olives, and feta cheese on my side. Launched at 850 F and baked about 2 minutes.

Annie's Green Goddess is the best bottled one I've tried. They also make a Goddess dressing, which I think is sour cream or mayo-based. Green Goddess is better.

The dressing I had actually came with our Green Chef meal kit last week. We liked it so much I kept the remainder of the pouch. I emailed them to ask the ingredients, and it's tahini, miso paste, and lemon juice as the base.

It was a pretty satisfying dinner! :)

Green Goddess is very easy to make. The problem is that you have to buy a lot of herbs so end up with lots of extras. If you have a good herb garden, no problem.

Yeah, I've looked up the recipe a few times but come to the conclusion that it's not worth buying all the herbs. Better to let it be a special treat when I find it at a restaurant. I may look for the Annie's version mentioned above though. But just seeing it mentioned today triggered one of those warm childhood memories of a food I rarely see these days.

Want to join me at mizrahis in July? I’ll buy you luncheon and if your vaccinated and comfy, we could eat indoors there or somewhere with AC. I can’t eat outdoors in July for luncheon.
