Restaurant Items Not Found on the Menu — You Have to Ask For Them

Here is an example of menu items for which you have to ask, as they are not found on the official menu itself:

For the benefit of FlyerTalk members, what restaurant items about which you are knowledgeable that you would recommend to fellow FlyerTalk members but are not printed on the official menu?

I await with knife and fork in hand...

When in London, at the Stafford Hotel, or in Paris, at Le Meurice, and you have over indulged in many rich meals, you can ask for a simple chicken sandwich at either hotel's bar and it's a welcome, simple lunch.

Why is the Bern's example of steak thickness an example of something not on he menu?? When I was there, they made it very clear that you ordered by thickness. The menu had an extensive chart showing what was possible, how many people it would serve, cost, etc. etc.

That was only placed there to put the following quote in context:

This is not a steak or chicken sandwich

But In-N-Out burgers are known for their secret menu. I personally like animal style.

Many fine steakhouses who do their own aging and butchering in-house will have a hidden special burger. It is made with the ground up tips of the prime selected cuts.

Seafood places around the Mediterainian and SE Asia coastal waters will do whatever you want that they have using the method that they are capable of to your liking.

I have had some great lobster rolls off the menu at seafood restaurants. Best one I have had outside of Maine was at Joes Stone Crab in Chicago. I think it was as good as anything I have had at the shacks on the east coast.

Fried fish head or fried fish bones in most highend Japanese restaurants. It's pure sublime.

In China, asking in Chinese at holes-in-the-wall has led to many an item not on the menu. A few times I've gotten mixed julienne vegetables with peanut sauce, and at Lanzhou lamian (ramen) places I like to combine meals then have the chef add onions or cumin. Sometimes they'll say my choices don't mesh, but I don't relent.

One of my mentors is on very good terms with the management of a certain Grand hotel in NE Asia. So they did serve us an Italian dinner in the banquet room of their Chinese restaurant on request.

And a friend of mine working for an unnamed European airline provided the same gentleman food from his native Asian country on our shorthaul J class flight in Europe. A first for the airline and he was rather pleased...

Steakhouses which offer baked potatoes will often serve you baked potato skins if you ask nicely.

Very curious...I like the grilled cheese at in and out. Does mcdonalds griddle the buns and toss cheese and any "veg" inside? I'm driving about 300 miles tomorrow so I'd love to make a few rest stops to see different franchise adaptations.

in the dc area we have many really ethnic restaurants. thai, viet, Ethiopian, Bangladeshi and south american come to mind. one can ask for "some special things" and "hot is ok" that is not on the menu.
