Pancakes, bacon and maple syrup. American breakfasts are great apart from the sausages which are often terrible

If I were to pick one item that defines an American breakfast, and is virtually impossible to find anywhere else in the world, it would be American pork breakfast sausage. Links or patty. I miss it terribly when outside the US for more than a week or so. There is no substitute.

This article (note- PDF file) covering a breakfast at Simpson's-in-the-Strand made me laugh so hard that I tore out the page from the magazine and kept it, then 15 or 16 years later transcribed it. (It's not available on the web - from pre-web days.) Copyright words, etc. are presumed.

I tried going to Simpsons a few years ago before work. I was dressed in a suit, but my girlfriend of the time had some (extremely expensive) jeans on and so was refused entrance.

At the time it seemed like it would be wiser not to go in and have breakfast by myself. We all get wiser as we grow up ;)

I'd say irish breakfast is the best, if only for the incredible bacon.

My favorite breakfast is Sand Pile eggs. I think its a regional Texas thing and I have yet to find it in a restaurant. Basically its shredded buttered wheat toast in a bottom of a bowl. Add crispy bacon hand shredded and top with a couple of Soft Boiled eggs, yolks still runny for toast absorption and whites just firm. Salt and more than enough pepper. Perfection.

I'm a sucker for a good Scottish breakfast (which for those who don't know should consist of bacon, eggs (fried, properly scrambled or poached) black pudding, white pudding, fried haggis, mushrooms sausage and/or lorne sausage and most importantly tattie scones and fried clootie dumpling). There's a lot in a Scottish breakfast you don't find elsewhere - I find english ones a bit dull as a result, and beans at breakfast are anathema.

Porridge is great if done properly, with salt, but since I can't trust that in too many places I only eat porridge when I make it.

I know it can't be had at a Hampton Inn!!!!

Although this place in Bali is one of my all time favourite breakfast places...

I have to go with Full English also, followed close behind by Full American (which I define as what I get at Denny's, Ihop, Perkins, etc.). I live in Germany but don't much care for the typical German breakfast, which is mainly stuff I would eat for lunch - cold cuts, bread, cheese, etc.

I like that the full English/Irish/Etc. breakfasts are big and hearty. My biggest problem with them is that they don't include potatoes. At least mine never have. I also find English sausage (bangers) to be like pork meatloaf in a casing. Bland and full of fillers. I can get around that by having bacon, but no potatoes to go with the eggs is a sin.:)

Da bin and you tiao and hot soymilk. Steamed buns with sweet red bean paste. Rice congee with pickled vegetables. That dimsun place where old women push around carts from table to table.

I prefer Asian foods I guess.

But, eggs benedict and that thing where they cut away a piece of toast and stuff it with ham/cheese(small amount)/bacon is also super delicious.

Also, that marvelous piece of sugar and fried dough that is a Krispy Kreme doughnut. Perfectly suitable for every meal.

Also a big fan of Dim Sum. Hong Kong Style in particular.

IMHO The United States of America serves the best breakfasts. Although I would agree with quite a few posters that English/Irish/Scottish bacon and sausages are nicer and tastier, and with the balck pudding comment, in the US there is also hash browns, potatoes, panacakes, maple syrup etc and also grits!! I love US breakfasts. In Hawaii there are all thos fruits too.

I last had a big dim sum Sunday feast in Shenzhen last November. Very enjoyable but again would not have time to do that every morning, same as with the tasty fry-ups from the British Isles.
