What country serves the best breakfast?

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day! I love eating bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches on a bagel right from my own kitchen... BUT, when I'm traveling my favorite restaurants to find (or look for) are those which serve phenomenal breakfasts. So... in which country have you eaten the best breakfast?

DownTheRappitHole Nov 14, 2011 3:02 pm

I'm a fan of Pho (beef noodle soup - Vietnam), Mie Goreng (fried noodles - Indonesia), String Hoppers (somewhat pancakes served with curry - Sri Lanka) or a Masala Dosa (large crepe with filling - South India)

DJGMaster1 Nov 14, 2011 3:09 pm

I wasn't aware that countries served breakfast. Frankly I would be shocked if there wasn't a single country on the planet where both excellent and poor meals couldn't be found with some effort.

braslvr Nov 14, 2011 3:37 pm

Breakfast is overall my favorite meal of the day as well, as long as it's eaten a couple of hours after waking. It's also normally my biggest meal of the day. Since I like hot and hearty, of the countries I've visited, the US is #1, Mexico is #2, Thailand is #3.

Your #2 is my #1. I like eating meat for breakfast. Thai breakfasts I like as well.

How does that differ from full English?

Usually includes Blood pudding both white and black.

My addition would be Dim Sum but I do like Kuiteoy in Thailand but always miss my English.

Isn't full English breakfast going a bit out of style? I still like it, but I'm not in the UK that often.

During the work week I usually have "Italian breakfast": coffee, cigarette and a bad mood, taken standing up and in a hurry.

Absolutely! ^^^

I don't think you can single out anywhere as having the best breakfast. It's what you prefer to eat.

I for instance love Asian food but can't eat traditional Asian breakfasts.

I cook breakfast for my children nearly every morning. During the week, it's egg White omelettes with a fried or poached egg on top or Porridge with sultana's and a variety of fruits.

At the weekends it's bacon sandwiches, full English and the best breakfast in the world - eggs Benedict.

Where have I had the best eggs Benedict? Copenhagen. The UK and US have some fine examples too.

So it's all down to personal preference.

Omelette with an egg on top?

My favourite is a London breakfast, sausages, bacon, fried eggs, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, fried slice, bubble, chips, liver, black pudding, mushrooms, heart attack, ambulance, emergency room, morgue.

My favorite breakfasts are in Hawaii because of all of the delicious fresh fruit.

Full English

My favourite breakfast is and always has been, a full English. I couldn't eat it every day, heck I couldn't eat it more than once a week but there is something so satisfying about it.

Whether it's the meaty Hawksmoor breakfast (below) or the diminutive take on a full English at Pollen Street Social as a starter (photo to follow when I get it off my old Blackberry) in the evening, it's clearly my favourite.

Eggs Benedict, French toast with crispy bacon, waffles or a simple mushroom omelette all come a close second.

No, an egg White omelette with an egg on top with a runny centre.

Not specific to any one country, but my favorite breakfast is a full brunch at any one of a number of higher-end Asia hotels. Eggs, Dim Sum, fresh juices, coffee/tea, et al. YUMMY!

Gaucho100K Nov 16, 2011 10:48 am

Brunch in a good hotel in Singapore is always memorable.... wait, does that qualify as BFast...?????

Nice...... I will confess to never have had a Hawksmoor breakfast, but after your post I will make a point of making sure I have one in the not too distant future....

:D ^

I have had breakfast buffets with a combination of American, English, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese. Unfortunately, when I return from an Asian business trip, I have somehow "found" an extra 10 or 15 lbs.

I have always loved the German and Swedish breakfasts. I love the open faced sandwiches and bread with jam and cheese!

higo Nov 16, 2011 1:09 pm

Wherever Sausage Egg Mc Muffins are served ^

emma69 Nov 16, 2011 3:39 pm

I have a rose-tinted view of the British Army Breakfast in the mess! Elements of a full English (scrambled eggs, toast [fried bread if a particular chef was on], baked beans, stewed or fried tomatoes) as I don't eat meat. They just had it down to a fine art. Less so where breakfast was served 'cafeteria style' but even then it wasn't bad!

mattkorey Nov 16, 2011 5:47 pm

Coffee, cigarette and a bad mood! Love it! Hilarious.

Those are my personal favourites too. Including the acquired taste of herring in the morning. ;)

But am also very fond of a Full English/Scottish/Irish on weekends and special occasions or then a traditional Chinese/Japanese/Korean brekkie that have become very familiar during the years.

Btw, that Hawksmoor breakfast pic looks all too delicious...Can't wait to get there now to try. :D

I haven't seen any pho restaurant serving earlier than 10 am.

Herring isn't really a German breakfast staple in most parts, but since North Germany gets lots of Scandinavian tourists, it can be found on most breakfast buffets. I much prefer it to the rather boring farmed salmon.

Breakfast is only served at the new location in the City near Bank. I went during the soft launch with three friends and we've decided to make it into a regular event.

The baked beans with small pieces of pig trotter are truly delicious but it's the HP gravy (HP sauce based gravy) makes a brilliant breakfast, exceptional.

Depends where you live...

Pho is definitely a breakfast meal in Vietnam (as opposed to lunch/dinner).

Canarsie Nov 17, 2011 12:31 pm

I enjoyed the breakfast buffet at the Crowne Plaza hotel on the outskirts of Bucharest in Romania. Tomatoes were part of that buffet.

The only way tomatoes can taste any better than the ones in Romania is if you grew them yourself and ate it just after it was freshly picked right off of the vine, in my opinion.

Another vote for a German breakfast. The little hard rolls with fresh butter and jam are wonderful. The Muesli is wonderful as well and although I'm not normally a coffee drinker, the strong German brews are a favorite of mine.

I like those rolls in the evening, but in the morning I think my jaw is just too asleep to manage them! I recall getting them on a lot of Lufthansa flights and just getting defested after a mouthful! I do the RitterSport chocolates from LH tho - haven't flown with them in ages!

smokie36 Nov 17, 2011 2:05 pm

German breakfast?? Nah...

Dutch breakfast far surpasses it with their take on scrambled eggs and much better cheeses and ham....then there is the garlic butter and excellent coffee.

What are those chocolate sprinkles called? :D

Chocolate vermicelli? The things they seem from the pictures to scatter on bread? We had them at home as a child but we put them on ice cream!

As was mentioned in Vietnam it's widely available for Breakfast. It's amusing to head by mid-range hotels and see a waiter from the hotel going to a street vendor to get the pho for some guests lunch :)

This has got to be the first time that I've heard anyone praise the Netherlands for the food.

Thanks (to an extent) to immigrants from Maluku. Also known as the Moluccas or Spice Islands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moluccas
