Whenever I am in the United States, there are two restaurants I find enjoyable:

WASHINGTON DC: Cafe Mozart

LOS ANGELES: Chalet Edelweiss ( near LAX )

Highly recommended, reasonable, authentic.

I had a missing checked-in case recently with AA, and was told it might be in on the next flight 2 hours later. I walked over to kill time at Chalet Edelweiss, had a nice meal, a glass of wine, and pleasant conversation with Karin, the Manager.

2 hours later Voila ! The case had arrived, and I was back on track again.

Forget Berghofs. In Chicago you are much better off at the Brauhaus in Lincoln Square or Edelweiss on Irving Park. If you want to add Austrian then Mirabell's on Addison is another good choice.

And don't forget Julius Meinl on Southport and Addison for coffee and pastries!

It has been a while, so I combed through recent posts and updated the list of favorite German restaurants on page 1.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Now, go eat, y'all!

Gruner in Portland, OR is amazing. "Cozy Alpine Cuisine with the hearty flavors of Middle Europe" isn't strictly German, but some of the dishes are amazing (e.g., Maultaschen, trout, beet salad, goulash). Yumm!

One more:

Chicopee, MA - Munich Haus.
Less than 10 minutes up the road from downtown Springfield. http://munichhaus.com/ Sausages made on site (excepting one type). Very good food, very consistent quality.

No one has yet mentioned the Rheinlander in Portland, OR, founded in 1963. I've been going there off and on since the mid-1980s. Always good.

There is a very good Germany restaurant in Brooklyn called Schnitzelhaus. I went there about a year back and it was pretty awesome. It doesn't get any press or special write-ups but it does serve authentic, German food. It also has a pretty decent beer menu. You can even get a beer in the big boot!

Check out Schnitzelhaus at http://schnitzelhausny.com/

Thank you for the link.

An interesting read.

Going one step further, I see that the original restaurant cookbook mentioned in the link article, can still be found on EBAY.US. And only $8.00 USD, too !

Most of the German restaurants in Chicago like "Milwaukee" are too much expensive. I think NYC for cheaper German restaurants.

Concur with the Waldhorn in Pineville, NC.

Probably 10 minutes from CLT, the restaurant has great German feel. Menu is authentic and extensive. The laugen brotchen (pretzel rolls) tasted very authentic.

My mom, a native German, was most pleased with the quality food.

Already planning my next trip.
