SWUs are on the menu of options for PM and DM. If selected as an option, PMs get 4. Once that PM makes DM, there is an option for 6 more. Total = 10.

Correct, but to clarify. Starting the year as DM will net a total of 6 max if selected.

Seems to me for this year if you're going to be DM in March, that we'll get 6 for being PM at the beginning of the year and then 6 more in March for becoming a DM for a total of 12 for 2010. Do I have this wrong?

Then these SWU would be worthless to me, and I would probably move the remainder of my international business to a different airline where I could be assured of my upgrade at the time of booking.
What I am also suggesting is that DL gives DMs a few additional "real SWUs" which could be used on any fare. In my quoted response, I was addressing the Z-availability. IMHO it is low because DL makes it artificially low. However, if it is really a problem, what I was saying is: why not give DMs a few "SWUs at any fare valid only on d-o-d or 5-days before departure", i.e., similar to domestic upgrades on sLUT fares. Hence, if you are DM and there is space up front, you have a chance of an upgrade on a TATL flight. If these are not good for you, don't use them, and if the existing PMUs work for you keep using them... |

I'm certainly not the expert, but would think those with 125k MQM in March will directly become DM and bypass PM, thus would receive the option to select 6. I may be wrong...

The way I read it, if you maintain DM in 2010, in 2011 you will get a 6 PMUs as one of your options -- the 10 PMUs is a one off thing and will only happen when you transition from PM->DM (I guess you could ping pong between the two and get 10 every other year). |

So basically all of us who will qualify for "original DM member" (btw...that's now my coined phrase and you can all pay me royalties) will lose out on one choice reward in 2010. It remains to be seen what happens next year when we re-qualify for Plat when we hit 75K EQM and then Diamond again at 125K. Do we get to choose a gift at Plat and then two more at Diamond? That hasn't been answered yet but doesn't make any difference until 2010 at the earliest. -RM |

One thing to keep in mind here is there will no longer be 80% unused PMU's once they become threshold options. People who find them useless will be inclined to pick other options.
6 PMU's at 125K could be one sub-option, 2 SWU's a competing sub-option. |

I believe that's wrong. I asked this question earlier in this thread and SkyMilesInsider replied to it. He said that if you start out as DM next year you will only get the option of choosing 2 rewards..one of which is the 6 PMU's. You do not get to choose the 1 reward for Plat and then the 2 for DM.

• Choice Benefits: You guys are wondering how many choice benefits you’ll get to select if you hit Platinum and Diamond in the same year. The answer? Three. You’ll choose one benefit when you reach Platinum and two when you hit Diamond. If you’re already a Diamond and you re-qualify for Diamond status, you’ll choose two benefits when you hit 125,000 miles.

If we start as new DMs, seems like we'll get two choices.
Choices being Gifting Gold Status, 6 PMU's, SkyClub Access, and Bonus SkyMiles. I don't think we get to choose 4 PMU's and 6 PMU's as DM if we start the SkyMiles year as DM. |

I agree with your math. The point being that even a doubling of PMU usage on international flights would decimate Z availability to the point of making them useless unless booking 331 days out. I (and I think most other very frequent flyers) can't plan my trips 11 months in advance.
Z still matters, because if there is no Z availability when booking, then you are trusting to luck that availability will be there on day of departure. If there are no Biz seats empty on the day of departure, then no upgrade. That would make the SWUs useless for me because I will not fly longhaul in Y. Others might be willing to play the upgrade lottery for a cheaper ticket, but I am not due to the physical discomfort (lots of herniated spinal discs). I currently have most of my international flights on DL booked in either I or M+ immediatly rebooked into Z. |

thanks, now I understand better. one other naive question: once "gone", does Z ever reappear before day of departure?

they also sell 90-day "trial preferred" to the bottom 3 tiers (with a flying "challenge" to keep it), at much lower rates, $200 to $600. |

it's a crazy system! but "only" $7,500, if you have at least one EQM from any source... $5000, if Silver (25001+)... $2500, if Gold (50001+)... $1,050, if you're at least Platinum (75001+)... $829 or less, if you're Platinum and get their 10,000 EQM from credit card use...
