I saw that article too. The article refers to DL's 737-800s not the MD-90s. Other than the A.net thread, I don't think there has been confirmation of the added seats.

It all comes down to whether you sell the 10 additional seats for $49 each versus $249 each versus $649 each versus $0.

I would think that the weight of the galley versus the weight of the seats probably offsets each other, so the real incremental expense involved is the additional flight attendant.

As an aside, I happened to be looking at the schedules yesterday and had not realized how many MD-90 flights Delta was operating ATL-MDW. I found that to be a fairly interesting niche market using this equipment.

Is DL preparing for hot days on MDW's short runways?

They seem to be filling these airplanes for the most part. They started doing this in February. It seems like Delta doesn't try and force MD-90's into Chicago because they routinely send in MD-88's. I guess if a -90 isn't available it's not a huge deal anyway since the 88's are 148 pax, 90's 150.

Used to be a time when the MD-90's niche was SLC-SNA. For a while almost all SLC-SNA trips were MD-90s. The fact that the MD-90 is the quietest airplane in its class made it a great match for the hyper stringent SNA noise regulations.

They really should have 16 seats in first class.

Even if you do not lose legroom with a slim line seat, you are cramming 10 more people into the cabin. You are that much close to the back of the head of the person in front of you, especially when they recline their seat. You are that much closer to the face of the person in back of you who is coughing that swine flu, bird flu, and SARS. Not much closer but sometimes you can just feel the crowding on flights with slim line seats. And some of these airlines' slim line seats are just too hard.

And if you cram in 10 more passengers, that is 10 more to evacuate in an accident. The last passenger off the US Airways Hudson landing flight seems t indicate that he just made it off the plane before the water was too high. If they had 10 more passengers on that plane, there could have been some loss of life.

MD-90 Ovens?

I know the 88s do not have ovens, and an upcoming IND-SLC trip is listed as 'Breakfast'. Will this be a hot selection, or a cold offering?

Thanks!

No. Only flights greater than 1500 miles get hot meals.

Really? I thought that...

"Flight Distance: 900-1,500 Miles (about 2-3.5 hours)

In addition to our snack selection you will also receive a complimentary meal."

This is F btw...perhaps I should have clarified that. I did not know there was a distinction between hot/cold meals on stage lengths that qualified for a meal service.

You'll always get something in F. However, it won't be hot unless the flight is over 1500. Expect a cold meal offering.

Looks like the MD-90 ovens got taken out the same time as the 88's and the airphones.

This is from 2005, so, do any regular MD-90 pax or crew know anything different.

ADLFO, thanks for clarifying that. I had a hard time digging up any information; apparently my googling skills are not up to snuff.

Thanks! Being used to NW's hot-meal policy, I'll grab a coffee before I board for something hot I guess.

Not true - most recent light JFK-FLL at 3:30PM, got NOTHING. Just a free bag of chips. Had to ask the FA to buy me a sandwich from the back

On the MD90's I have flown, I have gotten a hot meal only when flying into FLL out of JFK. Never got a Hotmeal on one flying into MCO out of JFK.

Timing is everything on that JFK-FLL route. I’ve taken this route several times either in the morning 8:05am or evening 6:30pm and have always been served cold meals. Morning consists of cereal and fruit, while dinner serves up Pasta salad or sandwich with fruit or chips and a cookie! There is very fine print regarding complimentary meal services on 900-1500 mile flights. From what I gather, if your scheduled departure is between 1:31pm and 3:59pm and you’re flying between 900-1500 miles, you probably won't get served a meal.
