I think that # 1008 and 1015 have been the only flights where they are using the MD 90 on this route, thus far.

Interestingly, the forward lav is HUGE, with a swinging (non-accordion door) and a very spacious inside. It was appreciably bigger than lavs on DL's 752's.

DL to increase MD-90 capacity to 160?

On A.net, there has been a thread about the additional MD-90s that DL is acquiring. And today, there has been an interesting rumor that DL will be increasing the capacity of the MD-90s to 160 by removing part of the rear galley and installing slimline seats.

If these rumors are true, the MD-90s will now match the total capacity of the 738s. The 738s actually were originally delivered with 152 seats, but after 9/11, DL removed some seats in the back of the aircraft, making the capacity 148. In 2003, DL added back in two seats in the rear, increasing capacity to 150. Now that DL has installed the slimline seats on the 738, they now seat 160 total.

If they add 10 seats, DL will also need to add one more FA. If those seats can pay for that extra FA, then why not? I'm wondering where DL is going to squeeze in two more rows in Y.

I doubt it. The reason why DL had the 738 capacity equal to or below 150 was because they didn't want to add another FA. Think of it: you will need more fuel, you will need to add the slimline seats, you will need to add another FA, etc. To do that, it will be hard to make a profit.

With loads where they are, does DL need to invest money to get extra capacity?

Where are they going to put the seats? Reduce pitch to 12"?!?

It would ruin a first choice of mine (when available - they don't own too many, do they?)

Keep in mind the credibility of many A.net rumors - though this one does seem to be confirmed by someone that is right quite a bit (and I have a hunch he posts over here on FT).

In fact, getting rid of the rear galley would open up probably about 8 seats, and 10 seats alone if you put seats where the door is (which I don't think would happen, though it could be possible. One of the possibilities the person I trust on A.net said is 16/144 (same as the 738s), which would mean 8 more seats in coach - would fit real nice into that aforementioned slot. Add in slimlines and you could probably get a 16F/144Y configuration in the MD-90s.

I don't know where you've been but Delta has already added 10 seats to the entire 738 fleet, making them a total of 160 seats (16F144Y), with 4 FAs per flight.

TOtal of 16, a small fleet that either had to be increased (to obtain critical mass efficiency), or completely gotten rid of. They obviously decided on the former as it is extremely cheap (relatively, compared to the 738, A32X family aircraft) to get them.

I think a lot of people would like to see the First class cabin upgraded to 16. I've seen that a ton as a major complaint of the -90. So if they added 4 more in first, then 3 rows on the 2 side where the galleys are then that would be perfect.

That rumor is true. It was posted in the Wall Street Journal on the 4th of June. AA is also doing the same as well.
