Used miles to go from PNS - SYD last year. First/Business all the way. Back then the difference between economy and first was 50,000 points each. So, no brainer, 240,000 miles vs 190,000. Got to fly on the 777 with laydown seats, picked some great seats, they remained ours the whole way. With the miles calendar, it was easy to move a day one way in order to save 110,000 miles each. It was easy and lots of fun.

Booked (2) MSP-LHR roundtrip direct in Delta One at 125,000 skymiles each.
Relatively last min booking at 11 days out. Quick 4 day trip. Paid price is $9,500 each.
My destination is AMS which is running $14,000 for the direct so buying the connection is a no brainer.
FWIW: The tickets were the last two in the bucket. Miles went from 125k to 210k.

Just this week, had booked BOS-DTW-LHR for 62,5k and BOS-LHR opened up for 62,5k.
62,5k Delta One awards (one way, to Europe) are still available. As noted above, LHR tends to be one of the easier destinations. My "gut" is that for cities like Boston with 2-3 BOS-LHR flights a day on BA and usually a VS flight that Delta is the least desirable choice for those who frequent the route. That is just my personal opinion, and observation. At least, for the Boston market. Same might be said about NYC (JFK/EWR), but I have less experience looking at that route on a regular basis .
Another issue, is that LHR is not really a great connecting airport for Delta/SkyTeam. Where as, AMS and CDG carry a LOT of SkyTeam connecting traffic. Once again, another reason why LHR awards might be "slightly" easier to obtain awards.
