Help please rerouted flight

hi everyone long time lurker and could use help. PM on DL whose flight got delayed to JFK for a connection to Europe so now I’m stuck. Original offer was to send me through Paris but that would delay me 6 hours to my destination. They then offered to go to United but I had comfort plus and the offer is being in 2 separate middle seats on United.

Legitimately in in terms of compensation what could I expect from Delta?

For a six hour delay in a situation where they offered to rebook you on another airline and you turned them down? Not much.

More details on your original itinerary would be useful.

OP is being offered --- I presume --- some form of C+ on his routing via CDG. If he chooses some other alternative, all is due is a refund --- not compensation -- of the fare difference, if there is one.

DL customer service could post this on its "no good deed goes unpunished bulletin board" !

Did you pay for a C+ fare, pay to "upgrade" to C+, or get a free upgrade?

Also, it would help to know whether you have status with DL or another SkyTeam carrier.

Was C+ paid, or a comp upgrade? You might get a token amount of miles or an e-cert if downgraded on a comp upgrade and you complain, but they don't have to refund any fare difference. Amount of miles and e-cert may vary depending on whether the delay was due to weather or mechanical (there are delays into northeast airports today due to low clouds). EU261 comp rules do not apply to US airlines on flights originating in the US.

Yep.
Fly UA, and collect the UA ff miles.
Then put in a claim with DL for "original routing credit" for DL ff miles due the delayed/rerouted flight.

If the delay was due to a mechanical issue then you should get some comp (probably miles) for the 6hr arrival delay.

I would not count on getting UA miles. Numerous reports of IRROP related re-bookings now getting flagged as non-mileage earning now that mileage earning is based on fare paid. OP would be eligible for ORC from DL.

Since OP is PM, I doubt he paid for C+

What credit card did you use to purchase the flight?

There is a chance that your card's trip delay benefit might activate at a delay of 6+ hours. If so, it seems like there may be a small possibility that a resulting expense, like reimbursement up to $300 or $500 (depending on the card) for a paid upgrade to Comfort+, is something you could fight for -- especially if it's a substitute for a hotel room and meals that you could have claimed while waiting for a flight tomorrow in your original (upgraded) fare class of Comfort Plus.

Obviously it would be a fight, but for high-value customers sometimes the card issuer and their benefits company will bend.

This exactly what OP wrote:

If the "original offer" was on DL, it looks to me like the choice is either (a) take the offer in C+ and a 6-hour delay, or (b) take UA flight with the downgrade and save the six hours. I don't see where it says to fly the UA flight six hours later. Am I missing something.?

OP has posted that C+ was a comp upgrade.

Said another way, he has an economy ticket. And that is all he is going to get on another carrier.

Or said another way, he is due a refund of the fare difference between the fare class for which he paid and C+. That is $0. It's not compensation, it is a refund.

If his travel insurance does pay out something here, he could choose to use that to purchase E+ on UA or even possibly F/J (C) depending on what UA has available.
