Delta MD-88/90 Retirement Tracking Thread
Here is a thread that will track the retirement, storage, and inactivity of the MD-88 and MD-90 fleets. Feel free to discuss their legacy as well.
Delta has eliminated the 88 from LGA and as of current estimation should have all of the 88s retired by 2020. The MD-90s may follow them out the door as the costs of overhauling the engines are increasing as DL is the only operator of the type.

What are they using as replacements for the MD's? I fly them regularly from DAY-ATL and they are always full each direction. I can't handle The RJ's or any of that size due to camera gear that I need to carry on.

Yes I am interested too - my primary flight is DAY-ATL-DAY - nearly always an MD-88 and nearly always full- F certainly is - in fact these days I often miss the UG.

That's a lot of aircraft to replace in the next ~4 years. Delta keeps talking about upgauging: increasing seat count per flight.
Delta has orders for another 55 739s, 60 more A321s, a bunch of CS100s, and an RFP out for 150 narrowbodies. There are also lots of other mainline types in the fleet with a seat count from 110-190.

The most recent add to 739 orders for Delta came when Boeing exercised a put option for ten aircraft in March of this year. The rest - well, Delta wanted those.

This thread is DOUBLE depressing:
The MDs are SO QUIET up front. It's almost as if there aren't any engines! One of my all time faves!
The B739s are AWFUL, as we all know, for multiple reasons.
It makes me all that much more glad that my flying is winding down.

I have to ask, how are they quiet exactly? I've been on a VS A340 in Premium Economy (in the middle next to 4 engines) which is quieter than an MD in seat 2D. As the plane ascends the AC powers up and it gets louder and louder until i can't even hear myself talk at a normal volume.

If you like in seat IFE this is good news
In first amd Exit rows 739 is pleasant at least,
If u book early enough ur ok otherwise not so much lol
Aesthetically I will miss the MDs, planes design is converging as such that all planes will start looking basically the same

I’m clearly in the minority who doesn’t mind the 739, but then again, I’ve never ridden in it outside of F. *ducking* 
RE: this thread - I also enjoy the MDs (88 or 90) and appreciate their workhorse ability. My home airport is still regularly serviced by both types for many flights a day, so will be interesting to see what these eventually transition to.

I was on an A380 earlier this month and that was really quiet throughout the whole 8 hour flight. I actually came away liking that plane.
