Good question. I don't know. But if trucking a replacement engine was necessary, at least PNS is a relatively short distance from ATL which makes the job less of a pain.

About ten years ago, I was at TYS on a bitterly cold evening and saw a remotely parked DL MD-88 having an engine change. My memory is fuzzy, but seems I recall an MD-80 engine can be changed in as little as five hours(?) depending on the number of mechanics and how experienced they are.

Perhaps there are presently plenty of spare JT8D-200 engines available now that there is a large mass of retired MD-80s in various boneyards? Ironically, I understand the relative lack of JT8D-200 engine parts was a factor that caused Delta to start retiring their MD-88 fleet somewhat earlier than they wanted. DL was buying JT8D-200 engines from other carriers like AA and SAS just for key parts and then scrapping the rest of the engines.

on that particular flight I was at an instrumentation console forward of the 3L (overwing) door, so it was something I saw, heard, and felt

from being on the flight deck of other jets during a couple of test conditions that resulted in compressor stalls, I remember that a surge due to rapid throttle movement during a stabilized flight condition often came with a brief shudder, but the experience was far more audible; on the other hand, if if was due to the airflow into the engine being disrupted during a windup turn (increasing “g” force by increasing bank and climb angle) or a straight-ahead approach-to-stall condition, there was usually enough buffeting to where it was tough to distinguish the contribution from the engine event

N918DH did not return to service for two days so it would not be too surprising if it went tech. Needless to say if it had been something like a medical emergency, the plane could have headed back to BHM in a relatively short time.

But even when the MD-90 and MD-11 entered service during the 1990s, seems both were saddled with poor reliability and performance shortfalls from the get go. Perhaps a sad reflection of how much Douglas/McDonnell Douglas had declined.

MD90, not 88, but there are some more 88s to retire this month.

I have said this earlier in the thread but still don't know how they can retire these birds at such a fast pace. It's hard for me to believe that new aircraft are coming online that quick to replace them. I'm sure that's whats happening but new ac delivery is just not that fast is it?

@N515CR you are correct. Sorry MD90. It is airborne now.

There are a TON of A220's being added. They are being added about the same pace. The highest tail number Airbus 220 was delivered on the 9th of August. N120 was delivered on July 25th. There are at least 5 others that were delivered in June and July. They are mostly being flown out of SLC, DTW and LGA. There is another BCS1 being tested around Montreal as we speak, which I bet is also delivered to Delta in the coming weeks.

No worries! 321s are also coming on at a fast clip (although slightly slower recently compared to a few months ago).

My current routes are no different, I keep thinking they will go away but the schedules keep showing them.

Lately I have been flying ATL- CLE, BUF, ROC and SYR. all 88s and 90s.

Me too. I'm ATL-PHL and ATL-YYZ. I think PHL will upgrade faster than YYZ. ATL-RDU also hasn't changed.

Interestingly, N901DL, N902DL, N903DL and a few more early Delta MD-80s (presumably including N904DL) were originally built as MD-82s. Only after entering service were they later converted to MD-88s. This was apparently due to MD-88 development falling behind schedule. I don't know if other MD-88 customers like Iberia got some of these "hybrids" or not.

Delta took advantage of bankruptcy to dispose of 901, 902 and 903 during the late 2000s and all three planes were parted out. I seem to remember reading that DL's first few MD-88s ended up being at least a little overweight.
