Thumbs down Any way to get Delta MQM waiver if can't get approved for an Amex?

I've had an account canceled in the past with Amex so I can't get approved for a new Amex card. I have a friend with great credit who would be willing to get the card for me and the idea was to then attach my SkyMiles number to it, but I called Amex and they said the SkyMiles number has to correspond to the name of the primary cardholder?

Are there any workarounds for this? Or if you can't get an Amex you can't get an MQM waiver since Delta only offers Amex credit cards and Amex won't let you attach a SkyMiles number to the card that differs from the primary cardholder?

There's nothing you can really do. Amex is correct in that the SM account has to match the credit card holder's info.

How long ago did you have the issue with Amex? Was it a closure due to default or something? Simply closing out an account in good standing won't block you from opening one in the future.

move out of the country ... SkyMiles members with an overseas address are exempt from MQD requirements (don't even THINK about trying to scam it however)

Are you talking about the MQD (spend) waiver or the additional MQMs that some AmEx DL cards give you based on total spending on the card?

For the first, just spend enough on DL tickets.

For the second, fly more or buy tickets that give additional MQMs based on the cabin class or fare class.

DL status does not require a DL AmEx card.

OP says "MQM waiver", but I bet he meant "MQD waiver".
If he were short 10,000 MQM's there's plenty of time to take advantage of a deal like the recent $346 rt fare SFO-SEA-HKG on Delta.

It's possible to earn 125,000 MQM's on a shockingly low amount of dollar spend -- and that's even without resorting to pointless "airport only" runs.

Faking a move overseas doesn't work because Delta checks. Best idea I can come up with is to ask to speak to an Amex reconsideration or credit specialist, and see if they'll grant a Delta Gold Amex -- even if it has a tiny credit limit or some kind of cash security: I'm thinking of those "bad credit" cards that are tied to a restricted bank account.

Normally secured credit cards aren't affinity cards. In fact, I'm not sure the extent to which AmEx is willing to give secured cards or even charge or credit cards with very low limtis; the charge cards (note that the DL AmEx products are credit cards) in principle have no credit limits.

As a matter of fact, I AM moving out to the country. I'm moving to South Africa. Hah! I didn't even know about this. So how do I do this? Once I arrive in South Africa, just change my address on file to my new SA address? How do they verify it?

I recall it only gets triggered when you hit the next tier. So the system "checks" whenever you cross 25,000 MQM, 50,000 MQM, 75,000 MQM, 125,000 MQM or 30 MQS, 60 MQS etc.

They require some type of documentation. DL.com has a list of acceptable documentation. It also requires the address on it to match the one you're mailing to, plus the location has to be residential, business locations, including private mailbox companies don't count..

What's to stop you from just using a friend's home address in another country?

Good to know. I just crossed 25K MQMs. Planning to do crazy amounts of travel in Q4 though and expect to hit 75K before year end. So I just need to submit the change of address to my South Africa address before I cross 50K MQMs and then the MQD requirement won't apply to me?

Yes.

It's not quite that simple:

https://www.delta.com/content/www/en...onditions.html

Certain address changes, including those moving from a primary addresses within the United States to one outside of the United States, require the submission of additional documentation to complete and cannot be completed over the phone or online. Members will need to submit one of the following documents via mail or fax to complete the address change request, and the document must reflect the members name and a residential address and may not be the address of a corporation or business: [...]
which isn't to say that a sufficiently motivated person couldn't find some workarounds, but also

Delta reserves the right to audit an account at any time for address accuracy, residency requirements, request further supporting documentation and update the address for any member's SkyMiles account using the National Change of Address (NCOA) data filed by relocating postal customers, but shall have no obligation to do so. Accounts found in violation are subject to penalty, up to and including termination of Medallion status and closure of the SkyMiles account.

DL asks you to show a lease and/or utility bill in your name as part of the documentation.

Delta will accept a legal residence permit from another country as long as your address is listed properly in front of other types of "proof".
