Okay, I will go along with whatever reason they have for security, fraud, etc.
BUT - what happens if you do not have that credit card with you when you are about to fly?
I surely can see that happen.

They can deny you boarding. Part of the CoC allows them to require you comply with their fraud prevention methods, including showing the card used to make a purchase. You can get a refund, but of course then you'll be paying last minute walkup rates on other airlines. When flying outside the US I always make sure to keep the card on me, even if it's expired/cancelled.
