Nice to hear that the 'main' SC will be reopening, although that is a smaller space than the 'satellite'.

My biggest concern is the coming influx of WN pax and the likely ensuing mess at security as more casual/non-fliers utilize the access point.

I guarantee B6 and NK have more of the casual fliers in BOS. Lots of business routes on WN out of BOS - leisure (i.e. TPA/MCO/FLL) leaves from MHT or PVD. Though its product is simple - WN is not the Walmart of the skies as many are led to believe.

Would VS really want to give up their lounge?

Interesting. Not sure who could or would want to leave B. AA and UA are pretty set there I assume. AC and VX seem to have a small nook that suits them well, both of which wouldn't fit WN's needs. Spirit wouldn't want to pay more in rent if they can avoid it.

I haven't read about if/when US/AA will move closer to each other. That could involve some more shuffling.

Does AA really need all the space they and US have?

I don't think so. But they need more than one side currently has. Maybe if Spirit, PenAir and AC moved they could fit into the pmUS side. Not sure.

WN is moving to A satellite but I'm not sure if they are getting all six gates on far end (18 to 22) as I thought it was only going to be four. In any event, here are some of the changes being made:

1. Gates 9-12; the former RJ ground floor operation is currently walled off and new 2nd floor (i.e. "normal/ordinary") gates with jetways are begin built. Not sure the finish date but should be soon.
2. DL is going to have access to all or nearly all of the main building gates (1-12) and the east end (or end closer to the runways) on the satellite (13-17). 14 and 16 can handle widebodies (as can 19). Gate 8 in the main building can also handle a 767.
3. The old main building Crown Room (last used as a CO President's Club) will reopen as a SkyClub. The satellite SkyClub will remain open. Unsure if the hours will remain the same or if they will be staggered. I could easily see the main building one begin open early AM with an evening close (e.g. 5am to 6pm) with the satellite not opening until later in the day and staying open through last AMS/CDG/LHR flight.
4. RUMOR (from DL employees): VS is coming over to A. For those with long memories will remember that VS originally used the end of B (current home of VX, previously HP, AA overflow for a while and for the really old timers: NA) for departures after being towed over after clearing customs.

I'm not sure how that would even be possible. We're about 2.5 months away from the summer schedules kicking in when DL alone has 3 Europe widebody departures around the same time (AMS - 7:10pm, LHR-7:10pm, and CDG-7:25pm which is up-gauging to a mix of 76W /764). With WN taking A18-22 this is going to push all other DL domestic flights to the main terminal for late afternoon/early evening departures as the widebodies are towed over from terminal E mid-afternoon. Even with the VS flight not being until 9:50pm, DL has it's second widebody AMS flight at 9:08pm (76W), so where would the VS flight have room to depart from as it's up-gauged to a 744 this summer. Can 744's use the A terminals?

In addition to Virgin, AF, AZ — maybe even AM — could all move into A and make it a true SkyTeam terminal. Even if they don't add customs, they could all depart from A after being towed over. I fly in and out of A all the time, and I think that would be cool. Much cooler than WN.

I really don't see that happening unless Terminal A gets expanded and customs gets added. Don't get me wrong, I support the idea, it is just very hard to see DL's 4pm-7pm departure bank with RON aircraft starting to come in at 7pm, along with DL's widebodies, AF, AZ, and VS having widebodies too. Even if DL had the whole terminal, still very hard to imagine. As the next post I quote points out times...

If the cargo facilities next to Terminal A get demolished and an expansion of the Satellite terminal with widebody gates to handle a 747 get built, with customs, I could see AF, AZ, AM, VS moving in there. AS could get the current A21 and A22 back, but otherwise DL and their SkyTeam partners use the rest of the terminal. There easily could be 6 gates added. It would benefit all parties. DL would use those gates for their international flights (not just AMS/CDG/LHR but also NAS, PLS, CUN). It would give AF/AZ/AM/VS more choice, and would also reduce the congestion in E for Massport. It can't possibly happen now, only if A is expanded and customs is added. I hope Massport would realize the value in that.

Apparently there was a 744 at A14 for a Super Bowl charter going to PHX. I don't think that would be able to happen on a regular basis though.

In other news...

Apparently gate A9 at BOS is open for business. An A319 from MSP is arriving at that gate later tonight.

Its not Massport - CBP was very cold to having two customs posts at BOS.

Also, NAS is a preclearance airport and doesn't need to arrive in E.

True, but that was 10 years ago, when Terminal A was being rebuilt. Maybe with the large international expansion BOS has had and the long waits that can result these days, CBP would reopen the question? We can at least hope.

It's a long walk, but I like the satellite terminal and especially the new and recently enlarged SC. Having all/most flights in the same early also makes it easy for people to connect at BOS. [Yes, I realize it's not a DL hub, but there are still BOS connections on DL that make sense.]

That is so NOT a long walk. I've walked it at least 200+++ times. I've found many of the distances at MSP and DTW to far exceed that walk.

Try walking from B-gates @AMS to G-gates for an international connection; NOW THAT IS A LOOOOOONG walk! :D

Now, the "million dollar" question, will BOS-AMS keep departing from gate 14. :D I sort of operate on cruise control, since I've never left form any other gate. :D

Correct, as is A10 on the corner. I arrived at A10 Saturday night SLC-BOS. Was a little confusing at first as there had been a wall blocking A9-A10 (by the Dunkin Donuts) for the longest time. However, there were not jet-bridges installed at the other gates (A11-A12), it's still gated off and looked like lots of construction still happening on the tarmac.

So I know this is the Delta forum, but with all the knowledge being shared here, I figure I'll ask anyway. Does anyone know if Sun Country will be moving back to Terminal A eventually - or really anywhere other than the heckhole that is the Terminal C satellite? It was an extremely rude awakening to be moved there last week after being in the relatively-nice Terminal A satellite.

will2288 Mar 11, 2015 6:36 pm

Given the way Logan is layed out, and frequent mergers and expansions/reductions of service, it is certainly possible for any small airline to move. I don't think there are any plans, but I would not be surprised to see Sun Country move, again.

In recent years, they have been at C, E, A and then back at C. I assume they would be happy at whatever terminal is cheapest for them.

Yeah, that walk is nothing compared to DTW or what I had to walk at MSP (G19 to C2, thank god for that bridge that took me from G to C). Don't see why people see it as such a pain when it's 5 minutes or less if you use the automated walkway and walk at a decent pace.

Looks like the AMS flight is still going out of A14, the LHR flight is going out of A13 since that fits a 767.

Thanks for sharing. If you had the chance to look, did there look like there was another jet bridge being put into place next to A10?

At A9 right now for a flight to ATL. A11 doesn't have anything looking like a jet bridge yet, though there is construction equipment where a jet bridge would end up. I don't see where gate A12 would even fit.

RobertS975 Mar 14, 2015 12:07 pm

I am hoping for the day that DL takes over all the gates in Terminal A and resumes all or most of the P2P routes that it (DL and NW) formerly had...
TPA, FLL, PBI, RSW, MKE, LAS etc.

One can argue that it doesn't want to compete for low hanging fruit against B6 and WN, but has anyone checked out the "low fares" on those carriers recently?

Besides, DL already competes with those carriers on those routes... just forces you to change planes in ATL. My argument is that the combined FF mass of DL and former NW pax will keep those P2P flights relatively full. And the ability for those stations to connect to DL and other Skyteam international flights and avoid the JFK morass would be a benefit.
