Changes at BOS Terminal A

Massport is changing some things at Terminal A:

AS has moved out as of today and Sun Country is moving out shortly if they haven't already.
WN is moving to gates A18-22 as of 4/1.

(Sources: respective threads on the AS and WN forums. Since I'm on the mobile site, I can't link to them easily.)

For DL fliers, this means that more flights will be using the main terminal instead of the satellite. This isn't a bad thing, except it means the SC will be orphaned, as the only DL gate on the side the SC is located is A17. (To be fair, A13-16 aren't that far away.) Also, adding WN fliers to the security mix should be...umm...interesting. If you're not Precheck already, there's no time like the present.

What are the chances of DL reopening the SC in the main terminal?

Interesting changes. Up until a year ago BOS was my home airport so I'm very familiar with terminal A there.

I'd guess that DL will close the Sky Club in the satellite terminal and take over what was the Continental club (and originally a Crown Room before that) in the main terminal. No real reason for them to keep a sky club out in the satellite terminal if they are only using one gate there on a regular basis.

I always wondered why they didn't use the main terminal more to start with. At least for us DL regulars it would have saved many a long walk through the tunnel to the satellite gates.

CO (and eventually UA) had A5-A8 while A9-A12 was one huge regional gate (which is/was in the process of being converted into regular gates as there are less CR2s and more CR9/E170/etc.)

WN will eventually be moving to B after US/AA re-organize gate-wise. That will be difficult since UA splits the two of them up, although maybe if you move Air Canada you can give US/AA everything before there and in the current AA section would be Air Canada/WN/whomever else.

I don't think they will close the SC on the satellite as DL could re-take A18-A22 in the future. No doubt it'll definitely have less people as most of the flights will be leaving out of the main terminal. Keep in mind that the AMS flight has to leave out of A14, and the 767s to LHR could possibly go out of A13. I bet most if not all of the 757s will have to use the satellite terminal too.

WN will be staying for 2 years if not less.

What do you base that on?

I read it in an article somewhere, can't find it.

Basically WN will move to B once that shuffle is done (lower leasing costs). Who knows what will happen as far as another potential airline coming to A if WN indeed ends up moving to B. What I heard was they could move in 18 months.

My conversations with the ladies in the SC indicate that the Main Terminal Sky Club will re-open on April 1st and that both clubs will be in operation. Hopefully traffic will keep both open long term.

The WN move was supposed to take place March 1st, but the work crews reconfiguring the gates for WN began work on the wrong end of the Satellite terminal (doh) and DL needs A13-17 for its larger planes.

Interesting. Not sure who could or would want to leave B. AA and UA are pretty set there I assume. AC and VX seem to have a small nook that suits them well, both of which wouldn't fit WN's needs. Spirit wouldn't want to pay more in rent if they can avoid it.

I haven't read about if/when US/AA will move closer to each other. That could involve some more shuffling.

Yup, the B shuffle would be easier if UA's portion of B didn't open just under a year ago. I think if AC moves to the B31 area (closer to *A partner UA too) and AA takes those 3 gates, that would be the best to have one operation there. It's a very weird situation. Massport should build an extension to Terminal E too adding more gates.

I really do hope they do open a skyclub at both terminals. It is not that it is not that far to travel from one to another, but in the last two years, BOS has had a lot of weather issues. When there are issues, the one skyclub gets crazy busy. It would be nice to have the love spread around.

WN is moving to A satellite but I'm not sure if they are getting all six gates on far end (18 to 22) as I thought it was only going to be four. In any event, here are some of the changes being made:

1. Gates 9-12; the former RJ ground floor operation is currently walled off and new 2nd floor (i.e. "normal/ordinary") gates with jetways are begin built. Not sure the finish date but should be soon.
2. DL is going to have access to all or nearly all of the main building gates (1-12) and the east end (or end closer to the runways) on the satellite (13-17). 14 and 16 can handle widebodies (as can 19). Gate 8 in the main building can also handle a 767.
3. The old main building Crown Room (last used as a CO President's Club) will reopen as a SkyClub. The satellite SkyClub will remain open. Unsure if the hours will remain the same or if they will be staggered. I could easily see the main building one begin open early AM with an evening close (e.g. 5am to 6pm) with the satellite not opening until later in the day and staying open through last AMS/CDG/LHR flight.
4. RUMOR (from DL employees): VS is coming over to A. For those with long memories will remember that VS originally used the end of B (current home of VX, previously HP, AA overflow for a while and for the really old timers: NA) for departures after being towed over after clearing customs.

With all the international flights being added at BOS, perhaps Massport finally decided to move some international airlines out of E. In addition to Virgin, AF, AZ — maybe even AM — could all move into A and make it a true SkyTeam terminal. Even if they don't add customs, they could all depart from A after being towed over. I fly in and out of A all the time, and I think that would be cool. Much cooler than WN.

It's a long walk, but I like the satellite terminal and especially the new and recently enlarged SC. Having all/most flights in the same early also makes it easy for people to connect at BOS. [Yes, I realize it's not a DL hub, but there are still BOS connections on DL that make sense.]

You know, they measured the tunnel and the terminals, and posted a little guide for folks trying to get in their number of "steps" while waiting for their flights. Good for a bit of exercise if you've got the time.

^ Same here. BOS is my home base, and I've gotten used to leaving five minutes to come back to the main terminal from the SC in the satellite. If there are two SC, I'm going to pick the one with my favorite SC ladies.

Fly safely,

DL says otherwise

How was the A17 lounge enlarged (I was last there in November 2014)? I didn't think there was any space left on that side of the atrium unless they reclaimed some space in the long corridor from the lifts.

The A7 lounge was quite small as I remember it - only room for 50 or so (while A17 could probably take ~125)...
