An update on Boston's plans for Terminal B includes an update on the gates at Terminal A as well. Logan will spend $45 million to combine AA and US on the US side of Terminal B, then move Southwest from Terminal A to Terminal B. Timeline is listed as 2018. So Southwest's time in Terminal A will have been longer than originally expected. Any guesses as to who will move into Terminal A after that? The cats and dogs in the awful part of Terminal C (Cape, Sun Country, Alaska) would probably all kill to move over to A.

What I've heard is that WN will not actually move until 2019, and when that happens, DL will get A18 and 19 back, the other 3 gates will go to DL partners (who that will be I do not know)

They could tow AF, AZ, AM, VS over for departures. They could also open the CBP facility in the basement (highly unlikely) and do international departures and arrivals out in the satellite. And then there's AS, which used to be in A, and WestJet is already there and will presumably stay.

Until runway 14/32 is closed (what a waste of land and money), South Cargo is relocated to that spot, and an extension to the satellite terminal is built where S. Cargo is (that could easily produce 6 widebody gates), no way AF, AZ, and VS relocate over. DL is constrained enough with their flights, never mind AF/AZ/VS. During the summer schedule (daily LHR, 2x AMS, CDG) as long as the inbounds arrive on time, A13-16 is occupied from ~1:30pm till ~7:45pm. Next summer the other gates will be even busier with all of the new flights/increased frequencies. You couldn't even get a widebody into/out of A20-22 because of how tight that alleyway is.

But with the current situation I could see AM moving over once WN is out. Not a widebody, one flight per day.

Here's an update of what I've heard regarding the Gate situation. I can see AM moving to A21-22 after WN leaves. This is still MORE THAN A YEAR AWAY

Southwest
OLD GATES - A18-22
NEW GATES - B30-36 (could add 3 gates, as there is no longer a need for widebody gates)

American
OLD GATES - B4-14 // B15-19 // B30-36
NEW GATES - B1-B19

Delta
OLD GATES - A1-17
NEW GATES - A1-A20

So would they tow AM over to A21-22 for just departures? Who else will use A21-22 if DL is only going to take A1-20?

Is the A terminal not just way too big for DL? Compared to the crowded B and C terminals, A almost feels like "deserted" most of the day.

According to this interview with Ed Bastian, Delta is hoping to get back up to 150 departures in the next few years and take the whole terminal back, less departures for partners like WestJet and maybe AM. Delta will have 100 departures per day out of 15 or so gates this summer. Presumably when they get through A20, they'll have added departures or moved in new partners.

The gates at Terminal A are well utilized during the day, it's just that the way they built the terminal with high ceilings and lots of seats at gates makes it feel like it's not as crowded as the other terminals.

The AM BOS-MEX flight is a red-eye departing at 11:30pm. I think they could move that flight departure to A now if they wanted to. Its only on the ground for 2 hours right now but I think they could adjust the departure (though post-midnight departures can confuse people booking trips) since I doubt they need to arrive at MEX at 4:40 am!

But there's o US pre-clearance in Mexico right. So the AM flight would have to arrive into terminal E and be towed over for departure?

Does Delta own Terminal A outright?

True, but E could use any free gate space they get.

It seems to be a long term lease according to wikipedia. Originally they were going to lease all the gates, but let some go during bankruptcy --

"The new redesigned Terminal A was developed under a special facility lease between Massachusetts Port Authority and Delta Airlines. The lease was signed on August 16, 2001 and development began. On September 14, 2005, six months after opening, Delta filed for bankruptcy and thus had to reduce the number of gates it leased in Terminal A"
