It was ceremonial. With 7 planes still in active use, there was no reason to believe that would be the actual last domestic flight

Exactly - last flight won't happen for a couple of months.

If the issue is max takeoff weight due to a shorter runway that's forcing the diversion, the stop at MSP allows them to take on less fuel than would be required to go all the way to ANC, thus less passengers and/or cargo has to be bumped as well.

I assume he meant a flight from DTW to South Bend last weekend but I don't know whether they were playing home or away, so this might be wrong.
It was on ATL-South Bend based on the news article I saw - Notre Dame was home but UGA was visiting so I'm guessing ATL-South Bend was loaded up with UGA fans heading up for the game. And FWIW, there was a lot of red throughout the Notre Dame stadium last Saturday night.

Via MSP they'll only have used up a short portion of their day.

Their could be delays due to routing, or on the ground loading fuel, getting new paperwork, airport delays, etc. When they take off from ANC they must have enough hours remaining for flight to PVG.
A rough day for 747s in DTW. DTW-PVG will make a fuel stop in ANC, DTW-ICN will make a fuel stop at MSP. DTW-PVG still expected at MSP tomorrow.

The remaining runways aren't that short. I'm guessing they can easily fly with no weight restrictions to anywhere in North America. They only get into trouble when they try to operate the very long TPAC routes

N662US oldest 744 is doing the mission ATL-NRT tomorrow. A 777 must've broke somewhere and they had the 744 sitting idle at DTW.

Lots of 747 idle time now. There are 7 planes combined operating 6 flights a day

This. It was not a flight for a ND game, it was a flight for a UGA game that happened to be in South Bend.

DTW-PVG no longer scheduled to stop in MSP today, has been cancelled (the stop, not the flight) per DL.com.

Saw 583 on Tuesday and 159 last night--there was a great crew out at the plane spotting park at MSP, lots of step ladders and big cameras!

As a UGA fan, I have followed this on rivals UGA site and a lot of people couldn't get home as scheduled. A number of people said they got over $1K, but not as high as $4K.

The sea of red was a sight to see.

Considering that they were willing to downgauge one of the TPAC flights last year in order to upgauge ATL-SEA, I fully expect that we'll see some aggressive use of the 747s at Thanksgiving (since that's one of the few times that level of capacity can be used).

Edit: @miraclebear2003: Was the sea of red from the fans, or the balance sheet ink from the vouchers?

Well, I was talking about the fans.. As a stockholder, the payments have negligible effect on the bottom line, and are well worth the positive publicity.

DL substituted a 747 instead of a 777 on ATL-NRT. So they had to position the 747 from DTW to ATL
