N661US / 6301 (12/89): Preserved at the Delta Flight Museum. Was the first 744 ever built. Last revenue flight was HNL-ATL arriving on the morning of 09/09/15. N662US / 6302 (03/89): Retired, flew to MZJ on 10/15/17. Was the first 744 (in 2012) to be renovated into the 376 pax configuration after the DL/NW merger.
N663US / 6303 (01/89): SCRAPPED, flew to MZJ on 11/05/15.
N664US / 6304 (04/89): SCRAPPED, en-route (DTW-ICN) over China on 06/17/15, was severely damaged by hail. Temporary repairs to make it air-worthy were made. It flew directly from ICN to MZJ on 07/10/15.
N665US / 6305 (09/89): SCRAPPED, flew to MZJ 12/01/16. Was the first 744 (in 2008) to be re-painted in the Delta livery after the DL/NW merger.

N662US, for quite some time now the oldest 747-400 still flying, had an inoperative APU (that's OK, with ground accommodations) and an inoperative climate control system (that's not OK) on pushback from DTW on October 8, 2017. The passengers and crew experienced some pretty warm temperatures aboard, not helped with an unseasonably warm October day. After repair attempts (plural), two taxis back to the gate, one whole plane passenger disembarkation (of a 747 with very few empty seats), and some crew and checked baggage offloading complications arising from that effort -- lots of bad luck combined with an airplane that has probably not had any "discretionary" maintenance performed for quite some time -- a somewhat cooler DL275 (N662US) departed over 3 hours late and arrived in NRT nearly 3 hours late. One flight attendant decided to abandon the over-warm ship during one of the returns to the gate in DTW, and the remaining flight attendants evidently picked up the slack. Passengers successfully made the most popular Delta MNL and SIN connections in NRT on October 9 (NRT-MNL continues the DL275 flight number, on different equipment) -- Delta's SIN flight was even able to leave 5 minutes early, despite the very late DL275 -- but most other passengers with connections missed them.
I thought the crew did pretty well, by and large. Most passengers handled the delay reasonably well, with the odd exception. In my experience, Delta handles irregular operations just about as well as anyone if not better. It certainly was an odd flight, though, with some strange (and tough to hear on that plane) passenger announcements.
The NRT team cleaned up and turned N662US quickly, and she flew the NRT-DTW return trip, apparently uneventfully. And then it looks like she sat in DTW for nearly 24 hours before heading onto Colorado Springs (COS) in what looks like a charter flight (or repositioning for a charter flight?) for the U.S. government.
It's a little too early to tell (unless someone has solid inside information?), but it could be that N662US is now finally out of regular scheduled revenue service. The NRT-DTW flight on October 9th might have been her last normal scheduled flight.

I believe that COS is the closest airport to the Air Force Academy. Could it be an Air Force Academy charter? It's too early in the week for their football team; besides, they play at home this weekend.

I was hoping to do a DTW to ICN/NRT/PVG for cheapest available but it won't look like I can do DTW to PVG before the 747 is retired from that route at the end of October. What are some other options for the 747 that are at or just above ~$1,000? I see lots of options for DTW>NRT closer to $2K...

Not necessarily. KRIV is March Air Reserve Base. If the unit at March is doing an annual tour or an exercise at COS (Peterson AFB or one of the surrounding areas), it may make more sense for the unit to charter a jet than pay for hundreds of plane tickets to COS. (This is just speculation on a possibility - I'm not stating this is what happened.)

Flew this bird in D1 DTW to ICN a few weeks ago. was upper deck: seemed to be in decent shape up front, but by the time i wandered through the rest of the ship down below, it had been pretty "lived in" after >10 hours in the sky, so i couldn't really tell. D1 cabin seemed to be decent. Wifi worked pretty well. Lost it a little over Russia/China-ish but other than that i was pretty happy.
Also flew 674US recently up front: almost identical to 662US. I will really miss the 747.

I'm flying DTW-PVG on 11/8. Looks like I'll just miss the last 747 flight and too early for the 350. A 777 currently scheduled. Any possibility at all Delta extends the 747 on that route just a little bit longer?
Of course no, who am I kidding. Though interestingly, this will be my first trip ever on the 777. I mostly fly TATL, and this is my first Delta TPAC.
