Did what will probably be my final DL 747 flight on 9/1 DTW- NET. Had a great chat with one of the pilots about what a wonderful plane the 747-400 is, and they then invited everyone sitting on the UD to take a tour of the cockpit! I even got my photo taken sitting in the captain's seat!

Interesting. Not complaining at all though! May they live on forever. Anyone on Flight 1352 tonight who can visually confirm the tail? Curious as to why they have the repositioning flight happening on the same time frame as the rumored 9/5 retirement of 6302. Maybe another one is retiring early in its place??
Also, I just ran across this blog.....seems like this guy is misinformed, or a bit early..at least I hope so!

Long time lurker -- you all have inspired me. I flew a DL 747 from ATL-HNL right after the merger. Were were stuck in ATL for 3 hours, in fact, due to an MX issue that was only resolved by borrowing a tool from KAL. (Or so I heard from the DL VP who was seated behind us.) So, now I'm excited that I'm able to travel one more time on the Queen of the Sky before they're retired. I've booked DCA-DTW-NRT-SIN round trip. Paid for J, but that lets me sit one more time in the upper deck and one more time in 1K. I'll really be sad when the last of these planes are retired.

Hey guys I'm booked to fly on the upper deck from dtw to Nrt on sept 26 and return oct 10th. I only booked this flight to experience the 747 for the first and last time. Now I'm concerned there may be and equipment change. What are the odds of that happening?? Thanks

The 747s are old, but they still work most of the time. You'll probably be fine. But none of us has a crystal ball. Should there be a substitution, there's a decent chance that DL would allow you to postpone your trip by a day if you explain that the plane was the purpose of your trip (they don't have to, but you should be able to get a sympathetic agent)

I took my last roundtrip flight on Sunday from ICN-DTW on the 744 (N674US) in the UD 78A and it was just such a wonderful way to leave the Queen of the Skies. Before takeoff everyone seated on the UD who wanted to go in to the cockpit was given the opportunity to have their picture taken in the captain's chair. Such a fantastic crew and the DTW based FA's were phenomenal, as expected.
I'm so grateful to have been able to fly with Delta on the UD and I'm just so sad that they are retiring these birds.

Just had the opportunity to be aboard two of the last Delta B747-400 flight routings. Had found a very attractively-priced award ticket back in March and grabbed it when I had the chance.
On 4 Sep, I was aboard DL577 (up front, in 5A), HNL-NRT, operated by N674US. The aircraft had arrived in Hawaii after operating DL275/576, DTW-NRT-HNL, and afterwards, from NRT, went back to DTW as DL276.
After six hours in Japan, I returned to Hawaii on DL576 (UD 77A), NRT-HNL, operated by N669US. The aircraft had arrived in Japan after operating DL275, DTW-NRT, and after Honolulu, flew HNL-LAX-DTW as DL1284/1352.
Festivities at the Honolulu station were much more elaborate than at Narita. HNL had a cake, balloons, hula dancers, emotional words from the Captain, media coverage, flower leis for every passenger as we boarded, gift bags for those in D1 (including a nice bag tag with a B747-400 photo, a leather passport holder, a plastic pineapple with cookies, a set of ear buds, and the B747 hologram card).
Narita passengers were afforded the opportunity to take pictures with the crew, and given a set of postcard-sized photo honoring the B747-400 for 28 years of service.
Both cabin crews were Honolulu based, most passengers (at least in D1) were Japanese.
It was nice to see recognition of the long service provided by these wonderful aircraft and I thoroughly enjoyed taking two final rides before they are gone.

Since I couldn't find my way back to the US for these flights I did my part by flying on a KE 747-8 this weekend ICN-SYD. These are amazing aircraft and I dread the day when the last one goes to the boneyard.

DL1352 ended up being a huge party flight
Billed as the final domestic 747 for Delta. Ceremony as we pushed back from the gate with a large contingent of Delta LAX employees waving the 747 goodbye
Party atmosphere onboard the whole flight to Detroit
Glad Delta was able to provide 747 fans this experience
