But these are no longer classified as "instant upgrade" fares as they were in the past. They are unquestionably first class fares.

Previously, you used to book an "A" fare where the fare basis was something like L00AB123/WNUP, and within the fare rules there was language along the lines of "this is a coach fare with instant upgrade to first class where available".

Now, you book an "A" fare and the fare basis is still L00AB123/WNUP but in the fare rules, that language is replaced by "These fares apply for first class service"

No mention of "instant upgrade" anywhere anymore, and IIRC, SkyMiles earnings are strictly tied to booking class, not fare class.

The wording may have changed but not its application. The very fare basis itself is proof of this-still an L fare at its roots (in your example)-all the rules of the ticket come from the L fare and not a true A fare.

I would think that the stated rules of that fare, including the part that states it is a FC fare, would be the ones that apply?

If most of it is a copy/paste from the coach fare, fine. But we're specifically talking about whether or not discounted FC fares are "true" FC bookings or just upgraded coach bookings. My read is that, based upon the actual fare rules as they are written, they are now true FC bookings.

Somewhat related: Has anyone actually ever seen an A or G booking where the fare basis actually started with those letters? I have yet to come across one.

What's the difference between A and G fares out of curiosity? Does one have priority?

jrl767 Dec 4, 2016 12:23 pm

just different buckets, G being lower (analogous to K being lower than Q)

I've been crediting some recent DL flights to AS; G gets a 25% bonus and A gets 75% (however, P is 100% bonus which has worked out VERY well in a couple cases)

Have had a lot of trips to YUL and YYZ from JFK and often ask at skyclub if Canada flights in F still count for lounge access. they always tell me yes, but I have been denied a couple of times this year with G bucket fares for reasons of "this is not a first class ticket, it's an economy ticket with a complimentary instant upgrade."
Interestingly, on P fares I've never had any issues getting in.

I'm pretty sure this is wrong. I'd get a name and report it to Delta via the e-mail complaint system (or get a Red Coat). G on Delta is just as much first class as any other first class fare. Oddly enough, domestic first-class travel to the Caribbean (any fare) does not get you Skyclub access at JFK *unless* connecting from international or SFO or LAX in business class (Delta One).

Anyone wanna know why some DL agents feel empoweree to make stuff up? Because people ask permission for rules that are clearly posted online.

I could care less what a single agent says - if the published rules say I am enritled to access, that's what happens. No questions for any SkyClub agents in the process.

I wonder - did OP ask as if he didn't know, or simply walk in and present his BP, knowing that he was allowed access? Seems that if the agent just scanned the BP, the computer would indicate the appropriate access.

OTOH, if the BP was scanned and access still denied, that's an entirely different story.

I thought that Canada was considered domestic for SkyClub purposes.....like The Caribbean and Mexico.

Interesting data point in case anyone finds it useful: Flying ATL-SLC-DFW tomorrow on a cheapie V class ticket. First leg is on an A330-300. $189 upgrade offer at T-24 (available only on first leg...no inventory on second leg). Took it in a heartbeat...flatbed!

When an itinerary like this is broken up...one leg in pay-to-upgrade RP class and the other in V (WU), I assume you only earn the MQM bonus on the RP leg, correct?

From the T-24 and RP this sounds like you accepted an offer during check-in? In which case no MQM bonus, sorry :( RP is usually the fare class for instrument (mileage/certificate) supported upgrades, which also do not earn bonus MQMs.

SLC-LAX U Fare $153.20

$832 upgrade offered, (booked into F). A bit more than the $65 upgrade LAX-SLC.

Damn Fox, as an FO I've got a better upgrade percentage than you.

I'm doing a DTW/BOS trip in a few weeks. First class is $20 cheaper than the flight I want to be on that is two hours later. I just bought the first class and am hoping to SDC since there are no occupied seats currently in First on the flight I want.
