upgrade question
On May 29 flying ORF-SAN, I am DL PM and checked my upgrade status (4 days before flight) today on Delta.com. It showed "available", there was a small box to the left of "available" which I checked for each flight and after I did that, it upgraded me and allowed me to select FC seats. I thought the upgrades were automatic, is this something new that you must do for the upgrade? I normally fly international so I am not used to being upgraded, so forgive me if this is something normal you must do now to get a domestic upgrade. Thanks.

nothing new ...
no, this is nothing new ...
although the process is automatic, if the upgrade is available due to your fare class and the time window, you will be able to select your first class seat at the time of booking ...

When you book your tickets, there is a box that asks whether you'd like to "request upgrade". Generally, this box is checked automatically for you. However, I recently booked a ticket for Mrs. GBadger (FO), and after booking, the "Upgrade requested" boxes were not checked. So I did it right away.
There is a chance that for some reason the upgrade requested boxes were not checked when you booked your tickets, and therefore, you were not in the queue for upgrades. Sounds as though you got lucky and are flying a route which is not elite heavy, and therefore seats are still available.
Always make sure the box is checked!

Thanks for the info. What you described is what happened, the boxes were never checked and I was unaware they needed to be checked to be considered for the upgrades.
