I normally fly international so I am not used to being upgraded, so forgive me if this is something normal you must do now to get a domestic upgrade. Thanks.
Upgrades are automatic...sort of...kind of...well, not completely.
When you book your tickets, there is a box that asks whether you'd like to "request upgrade". Generally, this box is checked automatically for you. However, I recently booked a ticket for Mrs. GBadger (FO), and after booking, the "Upgrade requested" boxes were not checked. So I did it right away.
There is a chance that for some reason the upgrade requested boxes were not checked when you booked your tickets, and therefore, you were not in the queue for upgrades. Sounds as though you got lucky and are flying a route which is not elite heavy, and therefore seats are still available.
Always make sure the box is checked!
