Walmart fail. What should I tell cashier to do?

Last week, I went to Walmart in Mountain View CA and used my FIA AX Rewards with a Chip and Signature. When I swiped the mag stripe, the register returned the "ICC Detected" message and instructed me to insert the card into the chip reader slot.

I got a message acknowledging the insert. The terminal even said "FIA American Express PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE CARD."

However, the transition didn't go through. she said it was rejected by the bank, but the receipt says "Customer Cancelled Transaction" which was not true. I didn't remove the card until the screen cleared.

Is there a keystroke for the cashiers to force the transaction as a swipe instead of a chip read when the chip read doesn't work?

Anything else I can do to make it work? I prefer to use this card.

I had the same issue with my UK card. Theres nothing the cashier can do, some terminals at some Walmarts were experiencing this problem but it seems to have been resolved now (Used Chipped Amex at the same terminal this morning).

Barclays Arrival+ Failures - WalMart and Sam's Club

In the last few days, I have tried to use my Barclays Arrival+ several times at WalMart and Sam's Club (different stores, different registers, etc.), and each time the card could not be read. My Citi AA MC worked just fine (with the chip). I called Barclays, and they claim to be aware of the issue at WalMart but seem to be able to do nothing...

Update: After several complaints, Barclays finally sent me a new Arrival+ card (and waived the fee for expedited mailing), and the new card worked just fine (with the chip) at WalMart.
