It has trip insurance, but I'll have to read the terms carefully to see how they compare to CSR. The net annual fee is much lower ($400 - $325 credit).
Yes, you are reading it right. Note that each point is worth 1.5¢ when redeemed as a credit for "travel" purchases using the RTR (Real Time Rewards) feature. So you essentially earn 4.5% cash back on "travel" and all mobile-wallet purchases (including those at supermarkets, pharmacies, dentist offices, as well as on apps which accept mobile-wallet payments), as long as you redeem the points for travel.

Like many card issuers, US Bank also has offers -- which first need to be activated -- for cash back on purchases from an ever-changing list of merchants. And many cardholders -- myself included -- have received generous annual retention bonuses, which can bring the net annual cost down to $0 -- or less.

If you expect to spend a lot at restaurants which do not accept mobile-wallet payments, I would get a second card for your dining purchases. The US Bank Altitude Go card -- which has no annual fee -- pays a straight 4% cash back for dining, take-out, and restaurant delivery.

4.5% is great! I see "Real-Time Rewards is only available for transactions with U.S. merchants". We likely spend enough on US airlines that this isn't a concern, although most of our travel is to Europe. Can you do a combination of cash and RTR? Any chance you earn 3x on travel purchased using RTR?

Does the US Bank Altitude Go card earn rewards which can be transferred to the main account so you'd have a single combined total?

You cannot purchase travel with RTR; RTR is for redemptions only. You would receive a text message every time US Bank received an authorization request from a travel company; the text would ask you if you wanted to redeem your points for a credit based on the amount of the authorization. (Authorizations from hotels and rental-car companies will often be for an amount higher than your anticipated final charge, but you can only points for the authorization amount.) You must have enough points to fully redeem for the amount of the authorization.

Points earned with the Altitude Go are only redeemable (at a penny apiece) for credits to your Altitude Go account; they cannot be combined with Altitude Reserve points, and cannot be redeemed for 1.5¢ apiece.

I just mentioned the Altitude Go card as one example of a high-earning card for dining. You might well find similar good deals for dining cards from other issuers.

For example, the CSR offers a $300 travel benefit off a $595 annual fee, bringing the effective fee down to $295. Compared to a 2% cash back card, this means that you're better off with the CSR if you spend more than $30,000 on travel, based on the ability to redeem points at $0.01. You could do better booking travel through their portal, but the customer service from the portal seems a mess if plans change, etc. The other major value of the CSR is the trip insurance.

Amex Plat offer 5x on flights, but not on hotels booked direct or through your own travel agent, but no obvious way to redeem points for cash. It also offers a variety of other things that don't seem useful to me, such as a hotel benefit that requires prepaying.

BofA offers a card that would be attractive, but it requires leaving a large balance with BofA.

Is there another card to consider?
We have a very high travel and dining spend and have been making bank with Chase CSR and point transfers to UA. Easily getting 8 miles per dollar when one factors in average points per dollar with CSR combined with UA valuation.

Compare to cards that offer 2% cash back on everything. You can find 12 of them in the Credit Cards > Free Cards > Cash Back Cards section of my website below. I use the
State Department Federal Credit Union Visa credit card, because it has no foreign transaction fees.

Red face What I _almost_ got.

After being declined for a Wells Fargo credit card - which, if I had received, would have been profoundly embarrassing to me [I did not dig deeply enough into Wells Fargo's complicity in the 2008 recession.]; I was approved for the U.S. Bank Altitude Go Visa credit card.
I do not do much home cooking here at the abode. I probably take out or visit restaurants six days a week. This card gives me 4x the points on these purchases.
Groceries get 2x the points. Family Dollar however only pays 1x.
Perplexingly, I am hamstrung by a $500 credit limit per statement period, which requires careful and judicious late-period credit charges. There is a 20,000 point bonus for spending $1,000 in the first 90 days. My first month on the card spent $500.02, and the second month was approved for $502.24, so I got the 20,000 points already. It has no foreign transaction fee; but the $500 limit is going to be a Herculean obstacle to using it in Japan [e.g.].

What card would you use for $20k in non-bonus spend?

Have some unexpected bills coming up (some will be reimbursed) and need to decide which card to use. No bonus categories, no CC surcharge or cash discounts. No current SUBs (need to wait a month to clear 5/24)

Considering the following options:
  • Amex Blue Biz Plus = 40k Amex points
  • Cap1 Venture/Spark Miles = 40k Cap1 points
  • Chase Hyatt = 20k Hyatt + 8 EQN toward elite status
  • CitiAA = 20k AA + 20k LP towards elite status
  • Chase WN = 20k WN + 20k towards CP
  • Don't need UA, DL or B6 status, nor do I care about 75k Amex Plat waiver.
Update 1: Leaning towards AA as I can status match challenge to Plat Pro which will save me some $$ on upcoming OW flights. But value of +20k transferrable points is significant...

Update 2: Ended up going with a combo of Amex Blue+, Cap1 and CFU to max the transferrable points. The timing was unfortunate as any bonus EQP from spend won't help me with 2023 and is too early for 2024. But may have 2nd thoughts about not doing AA...

So $20,000 in mobile-wallet purchases would yield $900 in credits towards future travel.

The card's $400 annual fee is offset with a $325 credit towards travel purchases, and frequently generous retention bonuses, which can bring the net annual fee down to $0 -- or less.

That status match to AA requires acquiring 42k LP every four months, right?

If so, perhaps an AA credit card to earn LPs and maybe even giftcards from giftcards.com if you can pay in $250 chunks

Big expenses coming; which card to get….

I have about 45K in expenses coming - need to purchase in the next 6 weeks. Want to maximize applications for SUBs

Im currently 1/24 (so proud)

Currently meeting:

10K on Chase Biz
3K on SW Biz (will get the personal SW card to get CP)

What else to get..(can’t really do anything on Amex)

Spouse and I have all 4 Chase Ink Cards each.

Could do Alaskas BofA for personal for me and both for spouse.

Any other ones I shouldn’t miss with this opportunity (it doesn’t happen often)

Thanks!

Not sure I agree with moving this the Manufactured Spend as you aren't manufacturing anything but rather maximizing SUB value. In any event, you don't note any hotel cards. You are getting Chase points which can be transferred to Hyatt, is Hyatt of interest? Chase Hyatt Bus is currently 60K for $5k spend. The personal card has a 2 phase bonus with 30K for $3k spend followed by a bonus period. Not sure what I think about the personal card option. IHG card gets 140K bonus after 3K spend.
