Is the Capital One credit line always crappy? I got a terrible one, but I thought that was because I'm a student. It's still annoyingly low

Just had a call to SAKS MC re upcoming Europe trip to avoid a block on my card. The SR said that as of April 1, 2012 the company is no longer charging foreign exchange fees. -- This is a fee free card.

Is anyone here using a Capitol One Checking Account Debit Card at ATM's worldwide with zero problems?

We're off for on a 7 country trip and heard that when traveling, even if you inform Capitol One ahead of time, sometimes you'll not be able to withdrawal cash from an ATM in some cases and you have to call in.

Thanks.

I just got back from a trip to France and Germany with my C1 debit card. The only problem I had was most likely my fault. I don't typically keep my money in that checking account, and only use it when I'm travelling. So, I transferred money a few days before I left, but apparently the funds hadn't cleared yet, so it took a few days for me to be able to access the funds. Other than that, it worked fine, I did call in ahead of time, which I would recommend doing.

I also used this card in Iceland with no problems whatsoever.

I have a Citi Thank You Premier Card for a couple of years already and it has an annual fee of $75 (not $125 as is the current fee). Since I have this card from before the advent of no fee for foreign transactions and I don't pay the current $125 annual fee, does this mean that my card does not have this feature and I will pay the foreign transaction fees or is it an across the board feature for Premier Card holders no matter when you got the card and how much your annual fee is?

Thank you!

You can call Citi and ask. Or if you want to get it in writing, you can log into their website and on the left side of the screen there should be a link to request your cardmember agreement. If your card has an FTF, it will be disclosed in that agreement.

TY Premier cards regardless annual fee situation, all have no forex fee. Mine is the 0 annual fee version that was offered very briefly a few years ago. It does not charge forex fee.

Understanding the difference between truly 0% and 1% foreign exchange fees

It is said that Visa charges a 1% forex fee. How about MasterCard?

http://www.flyerguide.com/wiki/index...d_credit_cards
On the list there are several banks charging either 0% fee or a 1% fee and I am a little bit confused about it. How can they charge 0% if Visa charges 1% as a matter of fact?

Quotes:

Stanford FCU
Stanford FCU does not charge currency exchange fees on Visa debit card transactions, but other financial institutions may charge a fee.

State Farm Bank
State Farm Bank check cards carry the VISA logo and while State Farm Bank does not charge a fee for foreign currency translation VISA may charge you for Foreign currency exchange which is passed off of current exchange rates at that time.

Visa and MC both supposedly charge 1% fees, but the banks that are reported as 0% "eat" the fee, so customers do not pay it.

Unfortunately the wiki's creator (me) hasn't taken the time to keep up with all the changes of the last few years so the wiki is badly in need of a cleanup.

I have been told that the purported Visa M/C 1% charge is effectively rebated to the issuing bank and that it was really put into effect to provide cover for the banks' rather profitable forex practices.

I don't want to get this thread derailed, but capital one is not known for high limits and for most applications it will pull a hard inquiry on each of the three major credit bureaus. Friends of mine who use Capital One when traveling also seem to have more problems with getting their accounts suspended for fraud (even when they call and inform capital one they are going to be out of the country).

I have had my CapOne Venture not work even with proper travel notification. We have also had numerous false fraud alerts with Citibank cards even with travel notification. Moral: you better take more than one no foreign transaction fee card on any trip. I will carry Citibank AAdvantage Executive Mastercard, CapOne Venture, and Chase British Air to have three no fee cards and use them pretty much in that order of preference.

By the way my credit limit with CapOne was at the very top end of initial credit limits of cards applied for in the past several years.
