Most issuers have a limit of 6 requested pulls within any 12 month period, although there are variations. The bureau of preference makes little difference because many scoring models include non-replicated pulls between all three bureaus.

the message is simple. Ask for credit only when you really want it. Do not shop via requests for credit.

It definitely seems that Amex pulls Experian in most places. Chase & Citi also pulled Experian on my apps this year. USAA & NFCU pulled Equifax on my apps last year, and I think most credit unions pull Equifax.

(Chase hard pull CRA's at random, although Experian seems to be favorite for Western states. I have a security freeze on all CRA's so I temporarily unfroze Experian only, applied online, then called Chase and told them what to pull.
They had a little trouble with the concept but it all worked out)

Actually this is not true. Applying for the older (no longer available) Schwab Invest First Visa 2% cash back card, one of my bureaus was frozen and a lady called and informed me that they were going to pull from another one because of that. They were able to recognize the freeze and work around it. I had left one bureau "unfrozen" since they did not offer an on-line freeze. They now do. Of course, not all issuers will be this thorough.

A half dozen posts discussing where to purchase credit scores prior to submitting a new application have been relocated to a thread on that topic:

Chase always pulls EQ.

Credit Pulls for Experian

I've heard that only Citi and AmEX pull from Experian and Chase pulls from one of the other two? I checked my credit report with Experian and only Citi and AMEX pulls showed. However, I checked the pulls for my wife and all of the pulls including 3 for Chase also showed up on her Experian report.

We applied for the same credit cards lately but Chase pulled from various reports. So I guess Chase jumps around in respect to which company it pulls as well.

"Who" pulls "what" depends, in many cases, on where you live. Check www.creditboards.com for more info. They have a forum with info on this.
