Hey, there I'm flying with Copa Airlines from Honolulu to Bogota on the 11th January. My flight connection is from HNL - LA 1h 30 min layover, LA - PTY 1h 20 min layover, PTY - Bogota. All flights are with Copa Airlines. I recently decided to leave the Islands sooner and go back to the mainland. So I'll first be in Las Vegas and take then the bus to LA so that I'll be there to catch my flight from LA to Panama(PTY) on the 1/11. My question is now if I have to inform Copa Airlines about my change of plans, if it costs me a lot of money, or if there's a way to cancel my first flight from HNL - LA without having to pay extra?
I would also love to know if I have to take care of my extra luggage myself or if the flight company does that since 1h 20 min seem to be little time to check in with baggage again. I never flew with Copa Airlines before and I appreciate every help.

Not taking the first flight cancels the rest of the itinerary, so you better let the airlines know in advance what you plan to be doing, and pay appropriate fees. I am confused why this is posted with Delta, though. COPA is Star Alliance, so HNL-LAX probably is operated by UA in your case.

Welcome to FT! As PHXflier notes, you posted this in the Delta forum -- most airlines have their own separate forum, and here is the one for Copa: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/copa-connectmiles-751/Originally Posted by adventurays

will ping a mod to move the thread there. (EDIT: never mind, ryandc99 is quick on the draw
)Even if the first segment is operated by United, until day of travel you still essentially have a Copa ticket. I'm not familiar with them either, but would guess that they're like any other airline in that flights with significantly different origins or destinations are treated as different markets and so would price differently and you would have to pay a change fee and difference in fare.
Note also that picking up in the middle is generally not possible; typically if you skip a flight then any remaining flights on the rest of your ticket are subject to cancellation.

Copa does not fly from Honolulu to Los Angeles so you may have a Copa flight # but it's going to be a United flight. Dropping the HNL-LAX will cancel the rest of the ticket unless they (Copa) agree to a change making it LAX-PTY-BOG which they will be happy to by figuring out the cost now for that flight and charging you the new cost and a fee (e.g a ton of money and you are stuck with whatever they come up with).Originally Posted by adventurays

If you are going back earlier and to LAS first why not ask them to change the ticket out of HNL to LAX/LAS (or just change the date to LAX and buy a super cheap hourly shuttle flight from LAX to LAS on any airline you like)? This sounds like not only are you dropping HNL to LAX but intend to buy another ticket on them or another airline which seems an expensive way to do this.
A change to an earlier date, but the same flights is quite possible and most likely to have a price not make you faint. The LAS part can be done separately. Note also you might find done in advance, a round trip by air from LAX to/from LAS might cost not much more than a bus and is of course much faster.
The flight change in Panama is not a problem. You go through no checks, just change planes. No security, immigration, nothing. I have arrived late and had 15 minutes to connect and luggage was not a problem. PTY is not huge and 90% of flights are Copa and they are pretty fast with the connecting details.
