Help using OnePass miles for trip

I've never used miles before. Ideally want to go First Class from Cleveland to Japan to Hawaii and back to Cleveland. But, I was informed on fodors that Continental doesn't allow that type of trip with miles.

Any suggestions on if this is possible? If not, is it possible to book the flights and upgrade to first class using the miles?

Advice and suggestions greatly appreciated!

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

While CO does require trips to Asia to use a Pacific routing I cannot think of any specific reason why a stopover in HNL would not be permitted, assuming that you can find the inventory. It would be in Business class, not First, since CO doesn't have an F product to redeem into, but otherwise it should be fine.

Did you have dates in mind?

Looking at mid October. Stay 7 days in Japan, stay 5 days in Hawaii (plus or minus a few days for best pricing and accomodation needs).

I called customer service over the weekend, on hold total of 45 min between 3 people... last never picked up and I finally hung up. Will try again, but hopefully will have a better understanding before I call back.

Your best bet would be:

CLE-IAH-HNL (STOPOVER, on continental) - NRT (On NWA)

or go the whole way via NWA/DL.

I wouldn't connect through GUM on vacation, but that's just me.

You can also consider NW HNL-KIX and KIX-DTW flights. KIX is only a short train ride from both Kobe and Kyoto, and you will likely find hotels cheaper than Tokyo.

Also, don't forget to check KE for TPAC routing back to US if NW does not have availability. IIRC, KE also serves KIX as well as NRT.

Good advice, though the KE rewards are a different series and have a different price point for redemption. Also, you cannot mix KE and NW flights in Asia on the same reward so JFK-ICN-KIX all on KE is fine but JFK-ICN-NRT with the last segment on NW is not. It is a very strange rule but one that is enforced.

I should have clarified my statement regarding using KE for TPAC routing. I meant CLE-hub-HNL-KIX on CO/NW then KIX/NRT-ICN-hub-CLE on KE if NW did not have availability for KIX/NRT-DTW-CLE.

I believe OP allows different series on outbound and return legs, yes? This should be similar to redeeming BF outbound and Y inbound on RT reward.

Yes, it is possible. I had a mixed reservation for a while though eventually I got it all onto KE for the TPAC flights, and got into J on the return.

KE = Korean Airlines
TPAC = Transpacific

KIX = Osaka airport
GUM = Guam
NRT = Narita (Tokyo)
ICN = Seoul Incheon

Hope that helps. :-:
