Tipping FA's??

I was flying from Phoenix to Newark this morning and was sitting in the first row of FC. I overheard the FA's discussing tips and how they almost never get a tip while working first class. I guess I never even thought about tipping for service in flight (although I hardly ever order cocktails).
I am curious about everyones thoughts on this subject.

We're compensated well enough that we don't expect tips. Please don't feel obligated. Personally, I think the tipping thing has gotten out of hand and it's nice knowing that the plane is ONE place where you don't have to feel like a dirtbag for not tipping. Now, if you really WANT to give a tip to your FA for whatever reason, policy allows us to accept it if you "insist".

That being said, I tend to agree with Mr. Pink's diatribe on tipping in the first ten minutes of Reservoir Dogs. I know, a little cold, but you know you feel the same way.

The tipping culture in this country has gone completely out of control. I have even seen convenience stores recently where the employees have a tip jar out (and no, such employees do not provide any sort of food service).

I saw a tip jar in a bathroom in FL it said something like 'tips for thanking us it is clean' and it was downright nasty!

Maybe someone put it there for satire

I give candy, not cash. That's more of a "share" than a tip, though.

true i don't even think of it as a tip, just kindness and quick appreciation for doing good, WHEN they do so.

The only instance that I have ever heard of this is when a dear friend of mine who works on a non-US airline got a tip once. She was surprised too.

I had a F/A tip me. I hopped off the plane in HNL and one of the FA needed to make a call (she had no cell). I gave her a $5 prepaid phone card that I had my business card logo'd onto it. And, on the return trip I was handed a loaf of Hawaiian bread and a bottle of champage and a nice note--"Thanks for the phone card"

I've only seen it once and it was several years ago. LAS - PHL redeye on National. My seat mate in FC drank the entire flight and tipped the FAs very well on arrival in PHL. They were stunned but accepted it very graciously.
