Lets have a big Brooklyn cheer for the folks in IT - AGAIN!
I purchased the DO tix for Mrs SG (NOLAlady) and myself on the same PNR. We are both Plat. I split the PNR a few weeks before the flight. Our flight is full due to a large convention ending in MSY and neither of us got our EUA beforfe OLCI. All items that are supposed to affect EUA priority are equal except time of purchase. My ticket number is lower, indicating an earlier purchase, even though purchased on the same PNR.
OLCI was seperate for each since they were on different PNR's. I OLCI'd NOLAlady first so her Sequence NUmber is lower than mine. We are both on the Upgrade Standby List but she is ahead of me on the list - WRONG!

i believe that when you split a res, the res that gets the new conf# is viewed as being purchased on the date of the split and not the date of original purchase.
which ever res retained the orignal conf# will be higher in the pecking order due to the "time of purchase" rule.

1. The 'Date Created for the new PNR reflects the date that you split them but the purchase date, which is the tiebreaker criteria, does not change.
2. In this instance,NOLAlady's ticket was the one that was split to the new PNR and in your assumption would have the lower priority. It has the higher priority.

If both of you had the same booking classes, then whoever checked in first would be higher on the upgrade list, regardless of when you had purchased the tickets.

I'm pretty sure EUA is prioritized based on time of ticket purchase, but standby upgrades (at the gate) are prioritized using time of check-in as the tiebreaker.
There is nothing WRONG with what happened.

Customers standing by for upgrades are prioritized based on several factors, such as paid premium cabin customers (including First Class and BusinessFirst) versus complimentary Elite upgrades. When not already confirmed in the premium cabin, customers on paid premium cabin tickets are given top upgrade priority.
On flights that are eligible for complimentary Elite upgrades, Continental OnePass Elite and Northwest WorldPerks Elite members with full-fare (Y class) tickets will be upgraded first. If there’s a tie between multiple Elite members having Y class tickets, the tie breaker will be the Elite status (Platinum, Gold, and then Silver Elite members). Next in the hierarchy will be Platinum Elite members, companions of Platinum members, Gold Elite members, companions of Gold members and then Silver Elites, respectively. If there's a tie between multiple customers having the same Elite status, the type of fare originally purchased will be used to determine priority. Specifically, the ranking of Continental’s fare classes from highest to lowest priority is: H, K, M, N, B, O, V, U, Q, I, S, W, T, X and L class. In the event there are multiple customers with the same Elite status and fare class, the time of check-in will be the ultimate tie-breaker. For companions of Platinum and Gold members, the time of being added to the upgrade standby list will be the ultimate tie-breaker (Platinum and Gold companion upgrades may only be requested within two hours of flight departure).
Once all Elite upgrades have been processed, all remaining customers eligible for upgrades will be prioritized. Upgrades for qualified pass riders will be cleared after all eligible paying customers have been accommodated.

Yes. If her sequence number is lower, and you're both plats and both have the same fare class, she SHOULD be ahead of you on the upgrade standby list.

No matter what order we purchase and check-in same fare class ticket (on different records), we run into the alphabetical ordering of EUA priority. J Smith always beats L Smith, so one spouse is always below the other because of letter of first name. We have verified this on many many flights. Does this apply in your case?

The definitive answer from CO insider is that the tie breaker is Purchase time UNTIL Battlefield takes over when the tie breaker becomes time of check in.
As was pointed out by seoulmanjr this was supposed to be corrected in 2008 but has been rescheduled for 2009.
If she wants to OLCI first, she can. If I do it, she'll be second.

It just never happened. It was supposed to be addressed as part of the 2008 program but it just didn't happen. It will likely happen eventually, but who knows.

Seems like as good an EUA priority thread as any to add to...
This AM CO40 iah-ewr, my spouse ended up rather higher than me on the list... she's silver, I'm gold. We had split the PNR's, both were "M". She actually made it rather high up on the list (probably ahead of some Plat). I called co.com support - they said they'd, "report it."

There is no doubt I got the short-end on EUA for my Tuesday flt from PHL-IAH (1677). This is a 5:35a flight, which I've often travelled. As of T-48, 11 pax have been upgraded. Of the 10+ times I've flown 1677 in last 9 months, I'm upgraded at T-120...every time.
Spoke with both elite desk & co.com support. I cannot believe that they are unable to see the EU queue...but that is what both departments told me. I was assured that because of my status, I'm automatically in the queue. Then each proceeded to quote the EUA process.
Now approaching T-24 and I just know that a Silver will get EU just prior to my OLCI.
No system is flawless and given the transparency we now have, I just don't buy the BS that CO support cannot examine the queue.
